SPCA International Arranges for Lost Dog Found 2,500-Miles from Home to Make the Long Flight Home

NEW YORK--()--In a story that sounds more like a Disney Movie than real life, ‘Pollux’ the dog who was found over 2,500 miles from home is finally back with his family in Montreal. The Labrador-Greyhound mix ran out the back door of his family’s home more than a year ago and somehow turned up a few weeks ago in an SPCA-BC Kamloops shelter some 2,500 miles from his home. The staff at the SPCA-BC checked for a microchip on the dog and found the owner’s information. Then the challenge to get the dog home began.

“After hearing about Pollux and his amazing story, we were delighted to step in with a $1,000 Grant for SPCA-BC Kamloops which covered the cost of Pollux’s flight back to Montreal as well as care for other animals at the shelter where Pollux wound up,” says Stephanie Scott of the SPCA International.

The family has no idea how Pollux got so far for so long but suspect the dog may have somehow travelled part of the distance by train or car. The dog first went missing in June 2010 and was cared for by a local Kamloops resident for a few weeks before being brought to SPCA-BC Kamloops Shelter this month. SPCA International officials hope to meet this week with Pollux and the family to see how the dog is doing since his long ordeal.

“We appreciate being able to help so may shelters and animals thanks to our many donors and supporters,” says Scott. “In this case it’s wonderful to see one family’s delight and a happy ending for a dog who was gone for more than a year and somehow travelled across the country of Canada safely. It’s a good reminder for all pet parents - make sure your pets are microchipped and that your contact information is up-to-date in the microchip database.”
