Gillette Invites Fans to Personally Congratulate Derek Jeter on His 3,000th Career Hit

Gillette Congratulates Longtime Brand Ambassador Derek Jeter for His 3,000th Career Hit with an Oversized, Fan-Generated Card and a $50,000 Donation to His Turn 2 Foundation

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Gillette, the world’s leading male grooming brand, honors longtime brand ambassador Derek Jeter for his 3,000th Major League Baseball hit by placing a 15 foot tall congratulatory card in the iconic Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Station in the heart of Manhattan.

“This opportunity to send personalized messages to a larger-than-life card for Derek Jeter through social media channels will resonate with fans of all ages.”

For today only, fans and friends worldwide can submit their well wishes and congratulations to the twelve-time All Star in one of three ways – tweeting using the hashtag #GilletteJeterCard, posting a message to Gillette’s Facebook page or stopping by Vanderbilt Hall. Gillette is using its social media platforms to create this memorable opportunity where anyone can send personal messages to be posted directly on the baseball star’s oversized card. As fans tweet and send messages, they also can watch a live streaming video from Gillette’s Facebook page (http://on.fb.me/GilletteJeterCard) where messages will be printed on the card in real-time. Jeter reached 3,000 hits with a third-inning home run against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, becoming the 28th Major League Baseball player to reach this historic milestone and only the 10th player to do so while playing for the same team his whole career.

“Gillette is very excited to engage fans in this once-in-a-lifetime experience through this unique program,” said Greg Via, Director of Global Sports Marketing at Gillette. “This opportunity to send personalized messages to a larger-than-life card for Derek Jeter through social media channels will resonate with fans of all ages.”

To celebrate Jeter’s accomplishment, Gillette will present him with the fan-generated congratulatory card as well as a $50,000 donation to the Turn 2 Foundation later this month. The Turn 2 Foundation, a charity organization Jeter founded in 1996, helps children and teenagers avoid drug and alcohol addiction as well as reward those who show high academic achievement and “Turn 2” healthy lifestyles.

“We are excited to congratulate Derek Jeter, who has been a great friend of Gillette, for his remarkable achievement,” said Via. “Like all athletes associated with Gillette, Jeter has always demonstrated confidence and determination to be the best both on and off the field.”

Gillette has a longstanding sports history that includes partnering with athletes who exemplify peak performance, both on and off the field. Jeter was named a Gillette brand ambassador in 2008 not only for his outstanding sporting accomplishments, but also for his exceptional character, his charitable actions and reputation as an icon of true sporting values.

About Derek Jeter

Jeter’s MLB career began in 1995 when he joined the New York Yankees as a shortstop. The following year he was named the AL Rookie of the Year and helped the Yankees win the 1996 World Series. He went on to become the team captain of the Yankees and win the World Series four more times (1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009.) Jeter has been selected as an All-Star twelve times, and has won the Silver Slugger award four times and the Gold Glove award on five occasions.

About Turn 2 Foundation

In 1996, Jeter founded the charity organization the “Turn 2” Foundation. The name “Turn 2” is symbolic of the dramatic double-play made by infielders during a game. It was founded to promote healthy lifestyles among young people and enable them to “Turn 2” his Foundation for guidance and the much needed help to avoid drugs and alcohol. Through these ventures, the Foundation strives to create outlets that promote and reward academic excellence, leadership development and positive behavior. Turn 2's goal is to see the children of these programs grow safely and successfully into adulthood and become the leaders of tomorrow.
