Sandia Labs and Princeton Power Selected for R&D 100 Award

PRINCETON, N.J.--()--The editors of R&D Magazine along with an independent judging panel have selected Princeton Power Systems (PPS) as a recipient of an R&D 100 Award for their Demand Response Inverter (DRI). The 49th Annual R&D 100 Awards salutes the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace over the past year.

The DRI is an advanced multi-port inverter designed to reduce the Levelized Cost of Energy of photovoltaic energy, and to integrate solar energy with energy storage (batteries) and electric grid communications and support functions. Applications for the DRI include microgrids, electric vehicle charging, renewables management, and grid services such as power factor compensation, frequency regulation, and demand response. Development of the DRI has been funded in part by the US Department of Energy’s Sandia National Laboratories, under the Solar Energy Grid Integration Systems (SEGIS) program.

“The DRI combines a commercial-scale solar inverter with Smart Grid functions and advanced battery management, to allow advanced applications such as large microgrids,” stated Darren Hammell, Executive Vice President Business Development. “This award is a well-deserved recognition for the tremendously skilled R&D and Engineering teams at PPS, for bringing this exceptionally powerful new inverter to the market.”

The R&D 100 Awards have long been a benchmark of excellence for industry sectors as diverse as telecommunications, high-energy physics, software, manufacturing, and biotechnology. Since 1963, the R&D 100 Awards have identified revolutionary technologies, such as the halogen lamp (1974) and now the Demand Response Inverter.

“During the recent economic downturn, industry, academia, and government labs continued to innovate. The editors were impressed with the strong field of candidates for this year’s R&D 100 Awards. The number of entries exceeded that of recent years,” said Rita Peters, editorial director of R&D Magazine.

Winners will be recognized at the R&D 100 Awards Banquet on Oct. 13, 2011, in Orlando, Florida. A full list of this year’s winners is available at www.rdmag.com.
