Hot Topics in Type 2 Diabetes: Physician Perceptions of Insulin - Physician survey provides insights into insulin usage and needs
The use of insulin to treat Type II diabetes is likely to increase in future, according to this Type II diabetes research report which has surveyed nearly 200 physicians for their views on the treatment.
Basal insulins are reported to hold the largest class share of the insulin market, followed by prandial insulin. Analog insulins (which are an altered form of naturally occurring insulin) are understood to dominate the marketplace, pushing out older classes of type 2 diabetes treatment.
Lantus, a basal insulin, is the highest prescribed brand of insulin for Type II diabetes and is taken as a daily injection, although the report indicates that the response from each individual patient has to be taken into consideration before type II diabetes therapies are prescribed.
Physicians in geographical regions with a higher use of insulin also tend to prescribe it at an earlier stage than other countries.
The 54 page report, published in June 2011, provides the reader with an explanation of the insulin market, particularly in terms of the practices employed in terms of prescribing treatment for type 2 diabetes patients. The analysis is split by geography: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and US; by therapy line and by insulin class.
Trends, patient compliance and unmet needs are also discussed in depth.
