Study: Majority of U.S. Workers Not Following Corporate Social Media Policies

nCircle Study Examines Views of 550 IT Security Professionals

SAN FRANCISCO--()--nCircle, the leading provider of automated security and compliance auditing solutions, today announced the results of the nCircle 2011 Information Social Media Study. The results are based on a survey of 550 respondents in the IT security industry, including senior management, IT operations, security professionals and risk and audit managers.

Highlights of this study include:

  • Only 32% of respondents said their organization bans the use of social media, a decrease from 39% in 2010
  • 68% of companies have social media policies, an increase from 58% in 2010
  • Only 44% of employees comply with social media policies, compared with 48% in 2010
  • 59% of companies are monitoring employee social media use in the office, a decrease from 71% in 2010

Andrew Storms, director of security operations for nCircle, commented, “The decrease in the ban of social media and the increase in the number of companies with social media policies is connected. As more companies get a handle on the policies and procedures needed to provide protect users and company confidential information, they are less likely to ban the use of social media completely.

“While it’s encouraging that more companies now have social media policies, it’s disappointing that companies are not being more diligent about enforcing these policies. The most important thing companies can do to protect themselves from the tidal wave of social media threats is to educate their users,” Mr. Storms concluded.

The survey was conducted between March 17 and March 25, 2011, and covered a range of security topics. To download a copy of this study, please visit: http://www.ncircle.com/index.php?s=resources_surveys_Survey-SocialMedia-2011.
