BIOMET AND OMeGA COLLABORATE IN SUPPORT OF ORTHOPEDIC GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION

Biomet, Inc., a worldwide leader in the development and manufacture of innovative medical devices, and the OMeGA Medical Grants Association (OMeGA), an independent, non-profit organization devoted to graduate medical education, have announced their collaboration to support the training of orthopedic resident surgeons.

Biomet will provide funding to support resident education through the third-party administration of OMeGA. OMeGA grants will provide financial support to U.S. and Canadian orthopedic surgeon residency programs to enhance the training of residents in the treatment of bone and joint disorders.

Jeff Binder, President and CEO of Biomet, stated, “Biomet has been a strong supporter of resident and fellowship education and research projects. The Biomet/OMeGA collaboration will expand our broad support to as many teaching institutions as possible in a fully transparent and ethical fashion. Bone and joint disorders are the leading cause of disability in the United States, and we need a growing supply of highly trained specialists to deliver the best possible care to patients suffering from these disorders. Support for residency programs enhances the quality of orthopedic healthcare.”

Biomet’s funding is intended for resident enhancement programs such as grand rounds programs, journal clubs, textbooks, attendance at professional meetings and other educational expenses. OMeGA is expected to award these grants in July 2011.

OMeGA will have sole responsibility for soliciting, receiving, reviewing and approving grant requests. OMeGA will award grants at its sole discretion based on adherence to qualification criteria, the merits of the request and the needs of the requesting teaching institution. Grant applications will be reviewed by the OMeGA Residency/General Education Review Committee, an independent panel of physicians who receive no compensation from the orthopedic medical device industry. Members of the Review Committee must also recuse themselves from consideration of grant applications made by institutions with which they have been associated in the last two years.

“Residency instruction is the foundation of orthopedic education, and Biomet’s donation is especially welcome,” said C. McCollister Evarts, MD, President of the OMeGA Medical Grants Association. “We appreciate Biomet’s trust, and support of OMeGA’s mission and the orthopedic profession as a whole.”
