Scotiabank Supports (ISC) Safe and Secure Online Program to Teach Cyber Security to Canadian School Kids

Certified Information Security Professionals Volunteer to Give Free Classroom Instruction on Social Networking, Online Reputation, Cyber Bullying and Other Hot-Button Cyber Issues Facing Kids

PALM HARBOR, Fla.--()--Scotiabank teamed up with (ISC) (“ISC-squared”), the world’s largest not-for-profit information security professional body and administrators of the CISSP®, to host a volunteer training session yesterday in conjunction with the SC Congress 2011 for the (ISC)2 Safe and Secure Online program, which teaches children how to protect themselves in an increasingly cyber-connected world.

Blair Campbell, CISSP, Scotiabank senior manager, Privacy, led the session and was instrumental in bringing the (ISC)2 Safe and Secure Online program to Canada on May 25th, 2011 by recruiting six (ISC)2-certified Scotiabank information security professionals to deliver the presentation at four schools across Toronto. With the support of officials from the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic District School Board and Rebecca Tompkins, School Actions Team program manager, more than 400 kids were educated on how to protect themselves and their online reputation.

At the session, 20 Canadian (ISC)² members signed up to volunteer, making it possible to reach more students throughout Canada in the coming 2011-2012 school year.

Upon request, (ISC)2-certified members from Scotiabank and other Canadian (ISC)2 member volunteers will deliver Safe and Secure Online, an interactive presentation designed for children ages 11-14, to tackle topics including cyber-bulling, online reputation, social networking, “sexting”, viral e-mail, identity theft, and more. The program addresses the gap in security advice that exists in children’s safety outreach efforts, using compelling materials for the classroom developed by former school teachers and presented by certified information security professionals. The program is offered to any school in the country free of charge.

“Scotiabank is proud to support this initiative, which provides our security team a vehicle to apply their professional skills to protect children and make a difference in their community,” said Greg Thompson, CISSP, Scotiabank vice president, Enterprise Security Services, and member, (ISC)² North American Advisory Board.

While there are several existing programs that address cyber safety for children, Safe and Secure Online engages certified experts and speaks to the children directly, as well as teachers, school administrators and parents.

To request the Safe and Secure Online presentation at their school, education officials can e-mail safeandsecure@isc2.org. To date, more than 250 program volunteers have reached over 50,000 students worldwide. More information can be found at https://cyberexchange.isc2.org/safe-secure.aspx.
