WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.--()--Mayor Jeri Muoio today announced that The Florida Guardian ad Litem Program recognized its Palm Beach County volunteers and honored Jim Sackett, WPTV anchor with a special award.
“It is my honor to be here to recognize their efforts and continue to do what I can to make sure we care for the children in our community.”
The ceremony was hosted by Jim Sackett, Emmy Award winning anchor, and was held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in West Palm Beach. Sackett spoke to the volunteers who are advocates for the more than 1,000 children in Palm Beach County who are abandoned, abused or neglected each year.
“Our volunteers work tirelessly to provide support to children who need a helping hand and pave a future of hope and emotional security when these kids need it most,” Sackett said. “It is my honor to be here to recognize their efforts and continue to do what I can to make sure we care for the children in our community.”
Sackett was honored with the first “Speak Up! for Kids” Community Service Award at the ceremony for championing children’s causes for many years through his involvement in Big Brothers/Big Sisters, as well as his “Thursday’s Child” television segment which features children who need foster care and has aired for more than 30 years.
“Today in Palm Beach County too many abused and neglected children go to court with no one there to stand up for them, to be their voice,” said Cicely Roberts, Circuit Director for the Guardian ad Litem Program. “Our volunteers take time out of their busy lives to make a difference in the life of children who need that voice. The GAL Volunteer is the most consistent person in the child’s life. I cannot thank them enough for their time and personal sacrifice.”
