NuPhysicia Licensed Telemedicine Method Granted United States Patent

Recognized as novel invention, Digital Medical Services now protected by patent

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NuPhysicia Inc., the world’s leading telemedicine services firm, is pleased to announce that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent for its Digital Medical Services or DMS system, the integrated networked remote medical care and telemedicine method. The patent is titled “System, Method and Program Product for Delivering Medical Services From a Remote Location,” and was obtained in close collaboration with the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. The University of Texas Board of Regents granted an exclusive patent license to NuPhysicia for this technology in 2007.

“This award recognizes five years of diligent patent work by the NuPhysicia team and UTMB”

“This award recognizes five years of diligent patent work by the NuPhysicia team and UTMB,” said Glenn Hammack, CEO of NuPhysicia. “It is a significant accomplishment, and is testament to the rigorous telemedicine system developed by UTMB and NuPhysicia.”

UTMB, having a strong focus in remote care, innovatively synthesized the elements of telemedicine, electronic medical records, pharmacy management systems, and standardized care protocols into DMS - a single, unified system for health care. The system has been deployed into health care settings as diverse as prisons, rural health facilities, and scientists in the Antarctic. The DMS system has been proven by providing safe and effective care to hundreds of thousands of patients.

“This patent for the DMS system is a significant achievement,” said Jason Abair, associate vice president and leader of UTMB’s Center for Technology Development. “UTMB invested considerable resources into the technology and methodology that created this innovative and much needed approach to providing remote medicine.”

Senior NuPhysicia management led the development of the DMS system at UTMB in 2000, and the subsequent creation of NuPhysicia in 2006 to commercialize the successful system. The now-patented DMS system is the core of NuPhysicia’s service brand product InPlace Medical Solutions and is sub-licensed to NuPhysicia’s telemedicine hardware and consulting customers.
