LENEXA, Kan.--()--The stop-and-go traffic slowing down millions of Americans may soon have less “stop” and more “go.” Rhythm Engineering’s adaptive traffic control system, InSync, is sweeping the U.S. as cities from 13 states install the technology at over 400 intersections. InSync’s artificial intelligence instantly adapts traffic signals to real-time demand, cutting travel time nearly in half.
“And I believe it will be beneficial from a safety point of view. I think we’ll see fewer crashes from rear-ends and people running red lights.”
The most recent installations are in Long Island, NY; Fort Worth, TX; Aiken and Mount Pleasant, SC; Augusta and Evans, GA; Salinas, CA; Topeka and Wichita, KS; Hillsboro, OR; and multiple locations across Pennsylvania and Missouri.
“Between 70-90 percent of U.S. traffic signals use outdated technology, causing unnecessary delays,” said Dr. Reggie Chandra, founder and CEO of Rhythm Engineering. “By fixing traffic signals, we can give more green lights and get people to their destination faster and more safely.”
Independent studies show that regardless of geography or other traffic challenges, InSync consistently reduces vehicle stops up to 90 percent, which cuts travel times up to 50 percent and reduces fuel consumption and emissions 20-30 percent. It’s also shown to improve safety by reducing red light running and abrupt stopping. One city reported that InSync decreased crashes on a key corridor by 17 percent.
Cities and states find InSync attractive because it is compatible with existing equipment and maximizes existing roadway capacity, delaying or even eliminating costly road construction.
“We got rave reviews about InSync not only from public officials, but also from motorists,” said Ashwin Patel, traffic engineer for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
“It’s saving money from an energy point of view because you’re not idling your car or putting pollution into the air,” said Linda Voss, City of Topeka traffic engineer, who chose InSync to improve three congested corridors. “And I believe it will be beneficial from a safety point of view. I think we’ll see fewer crashes from rear-ends and people running red lights.”
