The OIF Looks Beyond 100G at OFC/NFOEC

OFC/NFOEC 2011

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) is participating in a number of panels and speaking spots at OFC/NFOEC in Los Angeles the week of March 6th. Various speakers for the OIF will address 400G vs. 1 Terabit, Evolution to Higher Speed and Next Generation High-Speed Networks.

“The OIF is very active in educating and informing the industry about the technical work and collaboration taking place among the varied member companies within the forum”

“The OIF is very active in educating and informing the industry about the technical work and collaboration taking place among the varied member companies within the forum,” said Lyndon Ong, Ciena and the OIF Vice President of Marketing. “Our members are leading the charge to bring 100G products to market quickly and cost-effectively and are looking ahead to beyond 100G.”

On Tuesday, March 8th at 10:30 a.m. in the Expo Theater II, the OIF is sponsoring a symposium, titled, 400G vs. 1 Terabit: Market Needs and Technical Challenges. The OIF symposium investigates and debates the market requirements for the next generation optical network, considering 400G vs.1 Terabit speeds. The panel members will offer a market perspective and insights and opinions regarding the industry's next bandwidth threshold. Member companies of the OIF's Physical and Link Layer (PLL) working group will discuss technical issues such as Fiber Optic cabling, SerDes development and line side vs. client side requirements. Speakers include Gary Nicholl of Cisco Systems, Tom Palkert of Luxtera, Drew Perkins of Infinera and Sterling Perrin of Heavy Reading. Rod Smith, of Tyco Electronics and the OIF Market Awareness & Education (MA&E) committee co-chair, will moderate.

The OIF is also participating in the Service Provider Summit – Panel 1: Evolution to Higher Speed on Wednesday, March 9th at 9:15 a.m. in the Expo Theater I. The panel addresses the evolving market from the perspective of the Service Provider and how going beyond 100G will require new levels of innovation and collaboration—all at a compressed pace versus higher speed evolutions of the past. Dave Brown of Alcatel-Lucent and the OIF’s MA&E committee co-chair will moderate. Speakers include Dana Cooperson of Ovum, Hans-Martin Foisel of Deutsche Telekom and the OIF’s Carrier Working Group chair, and Glenn Wellbrock of Verizon.

On Wednesday, March 9th from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. in the Expo Theater II, the OIF is presenting a program on Next Generation High-Speed Networks – an OIF Update. Participants will discuss the development of building blocks for highly intelligent, reliable, interoperable networks that deliver enhanced services – all while meeting the challenges to simplify network operations and drive down costs. Insights on OIF work related to CEI, 100G and control plane will be discussed. Speakers include Hans-Martin Foisel of Deutsche Telekom, Jim Jones of Alcatel-Lucent, Lyndon Ong of Ciena, Tom Palkert of Luxtera and Torsten Wuth of Nokia Siemens Networks. Dave Brown of Alcatel-Lucent will moderate.

About the OIF

Launched in 1998, the OIF is the first industry group to unite representatives from data and optical networking disciplines, including many of the world's leading carriers, component manufacturers and system vendors. The OIF promotes the development and deployment of interoperable networking solutions and services through the creation of Implementation Agreements (IAs) for optical, interconnect, network processing, component and networking systems technologies. The OIF actively supports and extends the work of standards bodies and industry forums with the goal of promoting worldwide compatibility of optical internetworking products.
