Cabot Corporation to Implement Responsible Care in North America

BOSTON--()--Cabot Corporation (NYSE: CBT) has begun implementation of RC 14001 for its North American carbon black manufacturing facilities, company officials said today. RC 14001 incorporates the requirements of both the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care® code and the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.

RC14001 involves measuring and publicly reporting safety and environmental performance, implementing the codes related to facility security, and obtaining independent certification. Cabot anticipates certification for all its North American facilities by Dec. 31, 2013.

“Responsible Care is the global standard for safety and environmental excellence,” said David Miller, Cabot executive vice president and general manager, Core Segment and Americas Region. “We’re proud that many of Responsible Care’s principles and system requirements are already functioning well within Cabot. We believe that full implementation of the code at our North America facilities will further demonstrate our longstanding commitment to corporate social responsibility.”

Miller also said that full implementation of Responsible Care in North America can support Cabot’s growth. “North America is an important and growing market to us,” he said. “Beyond our commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen, we have found that exceptional safety and environmental performance leads to improved performance in quality, reliability and manufacturing, as well. All these factors have contributed to stronger demand for our products.”

Jacob Homiller, business director for North American Rubber Blacks, said implementation of Responsible Care will benefit Cabot’s customers. “We anticipate that the implementation will lead to improved efficiency and product supply, benefiting our customers in the short and long term. This also gives us an additional opportunity to reach out to our customers, suppliers and local communities in a meaningful way. We look forward to engaging with our key stakeholders on this issue.”
