VMware and Wyse Technology Bring Desktop Virtualization to More Classrooms, Improving Education on Lower Budgets

Schools and Universities Turn to VMware View™ and Wyse Cloud Client Computing Solutions for Greater Computing Freedom, Simplified Management and Reduced TCO

SAN JOSE, Calif. & PALO ALTO, Calif.--()--VMware, Inc. (NYSE:VMW) and Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing, today announced growing momentum for desktop virtualization in the classroom with VMware View™ and the Wyse portfolio of industry-leading thin, zero and cloud PC client solutions.

Universities and school districts are using the combination of VMware View™ and Wyse client devices to enable the computing freedom that educators and students want, while delivering the control and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) advantages school IT administrators require.

By modernizing their desktop infrastructure with VMware View™, school IT administrators can centrally manage all of their virtual desktops in a school’s datacenter, significantly reducing the maintenance time and costs associated with legacy PC deployments. In addition, the desktop virtualization solution from VMware and Wyse is an energy-efficient alternative to traditional PCs.

Research firm Gartner recently compared the TCO of personal computers versus what they term server-based computing (SBC). According to their findings, “The TCO of an SBC deployment used to deliver all applications to users is 8% to 13% lower than that of a locked and well-managed PC deployment, and up to 44 to 47% lower than that of an unmanaged desktop deployment.”1

Virtualization and shared computing are particularly attractive to educational institutions where multiple people are using the same device; such is the case with the schools below.

Manchester Essex Regional School District in Mass. recently built a new state-of-the-art green facility for middle school and high school. It is filled with 21st century features, including solar panels, light shelves that bounce light into dark classrooms while simultaneously dimming lights, and modern ventilation systems. Integral to the vision of making the building a model of sustainability and efficiency was a complete green IT strategy, which included desktop virtualization solutions from Wyse and VMware.

“It's a next generation solution. We wanted technology that conserved power, optimized our use of space, simplified our IT infrastructure and maintenance, and enabled staff and students to be as productive as possible. The combination of Wyse and VMware View™ has given teachers, administrators, and IT staff the ability to do their jobs effectively and conveniently, and has improved the learning environment for students.”

— Stephen Kwiatek, Network Administrator, Manchester-Essex Regional School District.

Morgan County School System in Madison, Ga. has one of the best computer-to-student ratios in the state. With a looming PC refresh across five campuses, the IT team decided to virtualize the desktop environment and replace 1,300 PCs with zero clients. The ability to Streamline PC management while creating a sustainable technology infrastructure for years to come, were two of the deciding factors in the move to desktop virtualization. Morgan County turned to VMware View™ and the Wyse P20 zero client specifically designed for the PCoIP protocol.

“VMware View™ and the Wyse zero client are a great fit for us. VMware was an easy choice because of our great experience using VMware solutions in the data center. We chose Wyse zero clients to replace our PCs because of its ease of management as well as being able to handle the diverse applications that our students use. While the main impetus for this move was to streamline management of the desktop environment, we are also excited about running all desktop and network resources in the cloud. After a year of planning and piloting, we are ready to deploy this next generation of computing in education that will ensure Morgan County students and teachers won't be left behind with technology.”

— Jay Cawley, Director of Technology, Morgan County School System

Nassau Board of Cooperative Educational Services of Nassau County (BOCES) is a non-profit New York state agency providing educational services for local county school districts as an extension of the state education department. The largest in the state of New York, Nassau BOCES supports 56 local county districts for integrating curriculum, instruction, administration and technology.

“Our mandate is to supply partnering districts with affordable, reliable and sustainable technology solutions that can be managed with limited resources. In the Hempstead District, we implemented and manage VMware in the data centers, and wanted to leverage the investment in virtualization by extending it to access points in the classrooms and labs. After extensive testing, the District Administration and I found the best possible combination in VMware View™ and Wyse for delivering unparalleled performance for students and staff.”

— David Lasker, Director of Technology, Nassau Board of Cooperative Educational Services
