Pulsar Informatics Adds Employees and Space at Science Center

PHILADELPHIA--()--Less than three years after moving into the University City Science Center’s Port business incubator, Pulsar Informatics has outgrown its facilities at 3624 Market Street. The life sciences start-up hasn’t gone far however; it’s moved into larger quarters on the Science Center’s campus. Pulsar has tripled its space and now occupies 3,255 square feet of office and lab space at 3401 Market Street. When it moved into the Port incubator in 2008, Pulsar Informatics had just one employee. Three years later, the company now employs 15 people.

Pulsar Informatics Inc. conducts leading developmental research in the assessment of cognitive performance and fatigue risk management. People’s ability to sustain attention and make decisions is affected by a range of factors, including fatigue and stress associated with shift work, night work, and extended duty hours. Understanding cognitive performance is important for effectively managing people in critical operational roles and helping improve worker safety.

Pulsar is developing a set of advanced tools for assessing and improving an individual’s performance to forecast and mitigate the risk of fatigue-related mistakes and incidents. Pulsar’s tools are being used in operational, research, and clinical trial settings by the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA), Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Defense (DoD), in addition to Fortune 500 companies and universities.

As a result of Pulsar’s decision to remain at the Science Center, the high-paying jobs associated with life sciences and technology will remain in West Philadelphia. “The Science Center graduates that remain in the region account for more than 15,000 current jobs,” says Stephen S. Tang, Ph.D., president and CEO of the Science Center. “We’re proud that Pulsar is staying in Philadelphia and continuing to contribute to both this important industry sector and the regional economy.” Other Port graduates remaining on the Science Center’s campus are Avid Radiopharmaceuticals and Integral Molecular.

Recognizing the Science Center as a contributing factor to the development and expansion of Pulsar Informatics, CEO Daniel Mollicone adds: “the resources and support of the Science Center along with the other fellow technology companies located on its campus and the proximity to world-class research institutions has contributed to the acceleration of Pulsar Informatics’ business development.”

Pulsar Informatics has also benefited from its location within the University City Keystone Innovation Zone (UC KIZ). As a UC KIZ company, Pulsar Informatics has earned $200,000 in tradable tax credits over the last two years through the KIZ Tax Credit Program. By remaining on the Science Center campus and within the Keystone Innovation Zone, Pulsar Informatics will continue to leverage the resources of the UC KIZ.
