"This Alfresco sponsored project has proven to be a disruptor in the BPM landscape and we are thrilled to gain additional industry validation by being recognized as a leading open source project by Black Duck Software," said Tom Baeyens, Chief Architect, BPM at Alfresco. "Through Activiti’s speedy BPMN 2 process engine that runs in any Java application, on a server, on a cluster or in the cloud, the Alfresco project has become the de facto standard implementation for BPM for business people, developers and system administrators.”

The Activiti project is an Apache-licensed open source BPM platform designed from a blank slate to implement the new BPMN 2.0 standard from the Object Management Group (OMG) and to support new technology challenges such as interoperability and the Cloud. Activiti was built from the ground up to be a light-weight, embeddable BPM engine, but also designed to operate in scalable Cloud environments.

“As one of the most established open source software vendors on the market today, Alfresco continues to lead the evolving open source landscape through its unique collaboration and innovation around new projects, which the 2010 Rookies analysis demonstrates, said Tim Yeaton, President & CEO, Black Duck Software. “Each Rookies of the Year project, including Alfresco’s Activiti, demonstrates the expanding use of community-driven open source development, and forward thinking by developers and the larger open source community.”

Black Duck used a weighted scoring system to evaluate the popularity of thousands of new projects that launched during 2010. The projects evaluated were drawn from an expanded universe of projects from the Black Duck KnowledgeBase and from Ohloh.net, the web's largest free public directory of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), acquired by Black Duck in September 2010.

Activiti became generally available in December 2010. For more information and to download Activiti, please visit: www.activiti.org.
