UC Irvine Extension Offers New Online Course in Navigating Organizational Politics

IRVINE, Calif.--()--The University of California, Irvine Extension today announced the availability of a new online course titled, “Navigating Organizational Politics” for the upcoming winter quarter. The course is designed for business professionals, office managers, project managers, human resource professionals, staffing specialists, and those who wish to obtain a better understanding of how to negotiate politics in the workplace. The course will offer insight on how to successfully navigate organizational politics, overcome challenging situations and excel in the workplace. With registration taking place now, the eight-week intensive course begins on Jan. 31, 2011.

“Knowing how to navigate organizational politics is crucial to professional success at any level,” said Brian Breen, assistant director of business, management, and corporate education programs at UC Irvine Extension. “In today’s competitive environment, individuals who possess both a thorough understanding of organizational politics and the skills to provide workplace solutions are the ones who will succeed.”

Participants taking the course will gain insight into organizational politics as well as positive strategies to manage challenging situations, bosses or co-workers. Other topics that will be covered include: political styles, personal and organizational power, uncovering hidden agendas, and dealing positively and ethically with office politics. Upon completion of the course, students will have the skills necessary to acquire positive politics tools, master the art of conversational steering, make influential connections and impressions, identify political challenges, and map strategies for success.

Course instructor Rachel Choppin has over twenty years of experience facilitating professional and leadership development. She has consulted and conducted training with organizations such as Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Nielsen, Newegg, Ingersoll-Rand, Razor USA, Intercare Therapy, Klune Industries, Medtronic, Advanced Medical Review, the City of Sacramento, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz and Stanford Universities. She is a member of the American Society for Training and Development and the UCLA Extension Human Resources Management Advisory Board, and creator of the coaching programs: Career Your Passion, Navigate Organizational Politics and Manage Yourself for the Life You Want.

“Navigating Organizational Politics” is offered as an elective course in UC Irvine Extension’s Certificate Program in Human Resources Management, Project Management, and Business Administration.
