Millennium Research Group Analyst Available to Comment on American Heart Association’s Announcement That They Have Been Using Duplicative Counting for US PCI Procedure Volumes

TORONTO--()--Millennium Research Group (MRG) Principal Analyst, Karene Dumoulin, is available to comment on the American Heart Association’s (AHA’s) announcement in December that they have been incorrectly reporting percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedure numbers.

A PCI is a minimally invasive treatment for patients suffering from coronary artery disease (CAD). Patients with CAD suffer from occluded coronary arteries that limit blood flow to the heart muscle (a condition known as ischemia). Arteries commonly become blocked by the buildup of plaque that accumulates on the inner surface of the vessels, which restricts blood flow to the heart and leads to an insufficient supply of oxygen to the heart. This results in angina (chest pain) or, in more severe cases where an artery is completely obstructed, a heart attack. When patients are treated with a PCI, a physician restores blood flow to the heart by pushing the obstructing plaque against the walls of the vessel to expand the interior diameter of the vessel. This is accomplished with either a balloon catheter and/or a coronary stent.

MRG Principal Analyst, Karene Dumoulin, is available to offer extensive expertise on this matter. Ms. Dumoulin can comment on:

  • The AHA forecast of PCI volumes in the US
  • MRG’s estimation of 2007 PCI volumes and how it differs from the AHA forecast
  • PCI segmentation by patient population and procedure type
  • 2010 PCI volumes, with a breakdown by patient population, procedure type, and stent usage
  • Key drivers and trends for the interventional cardiology market going forward

“The AHA now has a new way of reporting PCI volumes, which does not duplicate volumes as it did before,” says Ms. Dumoulin. “The AHA’s Heart Disease & Stroke Statistics–2011 Update reports the US inpatient PCI volumes for 2007 as 622,000 procedures annually, down from 1.3M reported in the 2010 Update for 2006. MRG estimated 2007 PCI procedures of 690,000 for the inpatient population, which is slightly higher than the AHA estimate but in line with data from the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ). We believe that the total PCI volume in the US in 2007 was in the order of 960,000 when the outpatient population is factored in, and that in 2010, PCI procedure volumes could be in excess of 1 million procedures. None of MRG’s market size estimates are impacted by the restatement of PCI volumes by AHA because of the numerous different sources MRG uses to verify their estimates.”
