Packard Children’s Hospital to Host Advanced Pediatric Cardiac Imaging Symposium

Jan 18-23, presented in conjunction with the Society for Pediatric Radiology; Attendees from Asia, Europe, North America

STANFORD, Calif.--()--The Children’s Heart Center at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and the Department of Radiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine will be hosting an Advanced Pediatric Cardiac Imaging Symposium at Packard Children's January 18-23.

The symposium, presented in conjunction with the Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR), provides an important educational opportunity. “Practicing radiologists and cardiologists from around the world will have a chance to learn about state-of-the-art medical imaging for pediatric patients with congenital heart disease,” said Richard Barth, MD, radiologist-in-chief at Packard Children’s and professor of radiology.

The prestigious event will have two components. First up, the 8th SPR Symposium on Pediatric Cardiovascular MRI/Basic Course January 18-21. It’s a continuing medical education opportunity on pediatric cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging for a group of 18 competitively selected physicians. Each will undergo intensive hands-on training to perform sophisticated cardiac MRI for patients with congenital heart disease. “These highly selected attendees are credentialed pediatric imagers dedicated to the care of children in major medical centers,” said Frandics Chan, MD, PhD, a pediatric radiologist at Packard Children’s and associate professor of radiology. “They will be mentored by 16 faculty leaders from Stanford and Packard as well as from other world-known children’s hospitals.

Second will be the 6th Advanced Pediatric Cardiovascular Imaging Course January 21-23. In this forum, 32 international experts in the field of imaging and clinical care of pediatric cardiac patients will lecture on topics of current clinical practices, state-of-the-art imaging technology and ongoing research. About half of the speakers are Packard/Stanford faculty and others are from luminary institutions from Asia, North America and Europe. The full list of participating faculty and their associated institutions and can be found at http://radiologycme.stanford.edu/2011peds, along with additional symposium information.

“This is an exciting event for our field and we are honored to be hosts,” added Chan. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to share our latest research and achievements with peers from around the world.”

(Course directors for this symposium include Drs. Barth and Chan along with Taylor Chung, MD, of Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. Read about the exceptionally large number of recent awards and honors Packard/Stanford pediatric radiologists and scientists have received from SPR here.)
