--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Steelers’ fans parking in the Gold Lot for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets will have an opportunity to see solar power in action as volunteers from The Black and Gold City Goes Green Campaign roll through the lot with a solar powered portable utility station to test and inflate the fans’ tires to the recommended pressure. The volunteers will be offering the service throughout the lot from 1 until 3:30 p.m., ending shortly before the 4:15 kickoff.
The utility station is on loan Slippery Rock University’s Macosky Center for Sustainable Systems Research, and will provide a living demonstration of how well solar power can work even during a typical winter day in Pittsburgh. And fans having their tires inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) will get improved gas mileage, and will be cutting their contribution to global warming pollution. Participants will also get to pick a gift from the Black and Gold grab bag, which has some Steelers swag and other cool stuff.
The Black and Gold City Goes Green campaign is a citywide effort to encourage Pittsburghers to take a series of monthly actions, all with little or no cost, that will make a measurable reduction in the heat-trapping gases they produce. This month’s suggested actions, available at www.theblackandgoldcitygoesgreen.com, include a number of free and low cost ways to get more out of your car and cut pollution. The website also provides a way to report your actions, and see how much pollution you’ve cut.
The Black and Gold City Goes Green campaign is the community action plan of the Pittsburgh Climate Initiative, which works across four sectors – municipal operations, higher education, business, and individuals – to make Pittsburgh the greenest and coolest city on the planet.
