Dell, Goodwill Expand Technology Recycling Partnership to 100 New Donation Sites

  • Free technology recycling now available to more than 42 million U.S. households

ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dell and Goodwill Industries International has added 100 Goodwill® donation sites to the Dell Reconnect computer recycling program, making it convenient for more than 42 million U.S. households to drop off computers and related accessories for free, responsible recycling.

“Since its inception, the Dell Reconnect program has created hundreds of green jobs for Goodwill employees who manage the recycling program”

The new collection sites, located in Delaware, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island, are now among more than 2,200 Dell Reconnect collection sites across the United States and Canada. The new sites are expected to divert approximately 5 million pounds of e-waste from landfills each year.

“Since its inception, the Dell Reconnect program has created hundreds of green jobs for Goodwill employees who manage the recycling program,” said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. “Dell Reconnect has allowed Goodwill to expand its sustainability policy and eco-assessment practices.”

Launched in 2004 as a partnership between Dell and Goodwill Industries, Dell Reconnect has diverted more than 170 million pounds of e-waste from landfills and created about 250 green jobs. Goodwill employees manage the collection and disassembly of the equipment. Donated equipment meeting the program’s quality criteria is resold, and devices needing repair are either refurbished or broken down into parts to be recycled by Dell partners. The program supports Goodwill’s job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have disabilities, those who lack education or job experience, and others facing challenges to finding employment.

“The Dell Reconnect program exemplifies what environmental sustainability can mean to our communities: a prosperous world and a successful future for our citizens,” said Mike Watson, senior manager of Dell Global Recycling Services. “The program has grown significantly since 2004 and is driving real, positive change in communities across the United States and Canada.”

Responsible Recycling

Consumers recycling through Dell Reconnect can be confident that their equipment is disposed of responsibly. In 2009, Dell became the first major computer manufacturer to ban the export of non-working electronics to developing countries as part of its global electronics disposal policy.
