“Trade and Trade Policy: The EU Clothing Import Market and Its Ten Largest Suppliers, 2010 Edition”
EU clothing imports declined in value terms by 6.7% to Euro56.17 bn (US$78.11 bn) in the year ending June 30, 2010. This was the lowest level seen since 2006. Imports were also down in volume terms, by 4.6% to 4.21 mn tonstheir lowest level since 2005. The average import price, meanwhile, fell by 2.2% to Euro13.36 per kg.
EU imports from all of the ten leading suppliers were down during the 12-month period, in both value and volume terms. That said, some suppliers achieved growth in the second half of the periodparticularly those situated in close proximity to the EU. In the Mediterranean Rim, for example, imports from Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey fell during the first half of the period but fared relatively well in the second half.
For certain suppliers in South-East Asia the 12-month period was particularly bad. For example, EU imports from Indonesia and Vietnamthe two biggest South-East Asian suppliersfell in volume terms at double digit rates, and both countries lost market share. However, the main South Asian suppliersBangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lankamanaged to confine the falls in their supplies to the low-single digits. Moreover, they increased their market shares.
China remained by far the largest clothing supplier to the EU during the 12-month period with a 44.4% share of total EU imports in value terms. However, this share was down slightly compared with the previous 12 months as imports from China fell by 7.5%. In volume terms, imports declined by 3.9% but Chinas share rose to 50.9%.
In 2010 as a whole, demand for clothing (excluding footwear) will continue to fall in almost all of the key EU economies as the region struggles to emerge from the economic downturn. The only exceptions will be Poland, Sweden and the UK. By 2014, however, clothing demand is expected to grow in all 19 economies.
