TACOMA, Wash. & BIRMINGHAM, Ala.--()--IID (Internet Identity), a provider of technologies and services that help organizations secure Internet presence, today announced it will contribute annually to a scholarship fund for students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). IID is committed to giving at least $20,000 per year to help support up to four students that are working toward a degree in either computer and information sciences, or criminal justice. In addition to monetary compensation, the students will have the opportunity to regularly participate in the analysis of emerging cyber threats in coordination with IID researchers.
“We are honored to be collaborating with one of the most advanced cyber security university programs in the world”
“This generous scholarship by IID frees students to worry less about paying for their education and more about learning,” said Gary Warner, Director of Research in Computer Forensics at UAB. “We are excited that our students will also get real-world experience by working with one of the world’s top Internet security operations teams at IID. They will be able to collaborate together to stop cyber-criminals who are using the latest methods – whether it’s phishing, malware or infrastructure attacks like DNS hijacking – to harm consumers and corporations.”
UAB’s computer forensics team is internationally known and works routinely with corporations, banks and agencies such as the FBI, IRS, NASA, Homeland Security, FDIC and FTC. Students at the university are involved in ongoing research and development projects involving the UAB Spam Data Mine, which collects millions of email messages used to provide investigators with spam intelligence and determine new cyber attack methods.
“We are honored to be collaborating with one of the most advanced cyber security university programs in the world,” said IID President and CTO Rod Rasmussen. “With many estimating the cost of cybercrime worldwide well into the billions of dollars a year, it is imperative that we all help train the next generation of Internet security experts, and nothing helps more than ‘hands-on’ experience.”
