K. T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship Announced Winners of Awards

TAINAN, Taiwan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The K. T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship has announced the winners of its Chair Professor Award, Research Award, Gold Medal Award and Honorary Scholar on November 9th in Library of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.

NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai revealed, “The K. T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship is donated by Chairman Bruce Cheng of Delta Electronics, an outstanding alumnus of NCKU, to National Cheng Kung University to award teachers with outstanding performance and significant contributions on technology and literature. Chairman Bruce Cheng has humbly donated the Lectureship under the name of Mr. K. T. Li to commemorate Mr. Li’s great contributions to Taiwan’s economic development. Thus, the Lectureship is not only to award those who have contributed to technology and literature, it also represents the spirit of respect for teachers and remembering where one’s happiness comes from.”

President Lai also mentioned, “The development of technology has to be a positive contribution to the human beings which cannot harm earth, destroy environment or affect the survival of human beings in the future. Thus, the K. T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship not only emphasizes on technological contributions, it also stresses on the spirit of social caring. It is the most important spirit of the Lectureship. The K. T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship encourages and inspires the young generation to engage in the research and development and technology and care for the human beings and the earth, so we can have better development of knowledge economy and our future generations can enjoy this beautiful planet.”

Academician Cheng-Wen Wu of Academia Sinica, the founding President of National Health Research Institutes and also the Distinguished Chair Prof. of National Yang-Ming University, is the winner of the Chair Professor Award, the highest honor of the K. T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship, and he is given a grant of NT$600,000. Prof. Wu obtained his bachelor degree from National Taiwan University and doctoral degree of Biochemistry from Case Western Research University, U.S.

Specialized in the areas of gene regulation and cancer, molecular mechanism of gene transcription, nucleic acid-protein interactions, specific proteases in cancer and other diseases, fast reactions of biological systems, spectroscopic studies of macromolecules and visual mechanism and photobiology, Academician Cheng-Wen Wu has received numerous awards and honors, including Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science, in 2000, Achievement Award, Chinese Institute of Engineers, in 2001, Case Western Reserve University President’s Award for Distinguished Alumni in 2002, Honorary Doctor of Science, National Yang Ming University, in 2003, Honorary Chair Professor, National Defense Medical Center, in 2008, and Honorary Chair Professor, National Chung Hsing University, in 2008.

Prof. Tzung-Fang Guo and Associate Prof. Chia-Rong Lee of NCKU Institute of Electro-Optical Science and Engineering and Associate Prof. Wei-Cheng Lo of NCKU Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering are the recipients of 2010 K. T. Li Research Award, and each is given a grant of NT$120,000.

Prof. Tzung-Fang Guo obtained his bachelor degree in Chemistry from Soochow University in 1993, master degree in Chemistry from National Chung Cheng University in 1995 and doctoral degree in Materials and Engineering from University of California, Los Angeles, U.S., in 2002.

Specialized in the research fields of organic thin film transistors (OTFT), organic solar cells, polymer and organic light-emitting diodes (PLEDs and OLEDs) and advance organic electro-optical materials and devices, Prof. Guo has received numerous awards, including Lam Research Thesis Award, Lam Research Corporation, in 2005, Outstanding Teacher Award, National Cheng Kung University, in 2005 and Outstanding Teacher Award, National Cheng Kung University, in 2007.

Associate Prof. Chia-Rong Lee obtained his bachelor degree in Physics from National Cheng Kung University in 1996, master degree in Physics from National Cheng Kung University in 1999 and doctoral degree in Physics from National Cheng Kung University in 2002.

Specialized in the research fields of electro-optical devices and physics in liquid crystals, photonic crystal and laser applications with liquid crystals, liquid crystal display and research in alignments and nonlinearity in liquid crystals, Associate Prof. Lee has received numerous awards, including NCKU Progress Award for Scientific Papers Published in 2007, Faculty Research Award in 2008, Faculty Research Award in 2009 and K. T. Li Research Award in 2010.

Associate Prof. Wei-Cheng Lo obtained his bachelor degree in Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering from National Cheng Kung University in 1993, master degree of Civil and Environmental Engineering from Cornell University, U.S., in 1996 and doctoral degree of Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of California at Berkeley, U.S., in 2003.

Specialized in the research fields of wave propagation and attenuation through an elastic porous medium, two immiscible viscous compressible fluids, groundwater remediation and enhanced oil recovery and continuum mechanics of mixtures, Associate Prof. Lo has received numerous awards and honors, including Excellent Young Engineer Award, Chinese Water Resources Management Society, in 2007, Distinguished Young Engineer, Chinese Water Resources Management Society, in 2007, and Excellent Teaching Award, National Cheng Kung University, in 2008.

Associate Prof. Chih-Lung Lin of NCKU Department of Electrical Engineering is the recipient of 2010 K. T. Li Gold Medal Award. He obtained his bachelor degree of Electrical Engineering from National Cheng Kung University, master degree of Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University and doctoral degree of Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University.

Specialized in the research fields of flat panel display (OLED and LTPS) circuit design and color image processing, biomedical signal IC design and short haul wireless communication system, Associate Prof. Lin has received bronze medal in 1998 National University and College Teachers’ Patent Competition, National Cultural Association, and 2nd Prize in 1998 Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Creative Design Contest Graduate Group.

Prof. Ling-Huei Huang of NCKU Institute of Biotechnology is another recipient of the 2010 K. T. Li Gold Medal Award. She obtained her bachelor degree Agricultural Chemistry from National Taiwan University in 1983, master degree of Biochemistry and Nutrition from National University in 1985 and doctoral degree of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from University of Southern California, Los Angeles, U.S., in 1993.

Specialized in the research fields of regenerative technology, biomaterial and tissue engineering, bio-chemistry technology and cell biology, Prof. Huang has received numerous awards and honors, including Student Awards for Outstanding Research, Society For Biomaterials, U.S., in 1989, Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE), International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, in 2008, Chairperson of International Conference on Processing and Manufacturing of Advanced Materials in 2009, Advisory Board of the 9th International Conference on Medical Applications of Novel Biomaterials and Nano-Biotechnology in 2010.

Chair Prof. Jen-Fin Lin of NCKU Department of Mechanical Engineering is the 2010 K. T. Li Honorary Scholar and is given a grant of NT$300,000. He obtained his doctoral degree of Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University, U.S., in 1985.

Specialized in the research fields of nanotechnology, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) and molecular dynamics, Chair Prof. Lin has received numerous awards and honors, including Fellow of American Society Of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 2008, 2nd Prize of Best Journal Paper Award, Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Republic of China (STAM), in 2009, Editorial Board Member, Journal of Nanoscience Letters, in 2010, and Editorial Board Member, Current Nanoscience Journal, in 2010.

The K. T. Li Technology and Literature Lectureship is established to promote the future technological and economic development of Taiwan, assist teachers or graduate students to engage in technology and literature related academic work and recognize those who have made contributions to the research and innovations of technology and literature, thus the technological developments and human accomplishments can elevate and become more intimate.
