WESTPORT, Conn.--()--Newman’s Own, Inc., a leading supporter of USA WEEKEND Magazine’s Make A Difference Day since 1994, will energize this weekend’s nationwide volunteer efforts with $130,000 in awards. Ten $10,000 Newman’s Own awards and three newly added City Awards of $10,000 each will be announced spring 2011, following the judging of the weekend’s volunteer events. The City Awards will be presented to three cities that make a difference through volunteer efforts in their communities.

Newman’s Own will provide additional fuel during the weekend at Sweet Enough Cereal breakfasts at one volunteer initiative in each state, and will provide a free Newman’s Own product to each event registered in the USA WEEKEND volunteer database. An additional 100 projects were chosen to win a Cisco Flip camera for event organizers to record and upload their volunteer action to the Make A Difference Day You Tube channel at www.youtube.com/makeadifferenceday to inspire others with volunteer possibilities and results.
The new City Awards category is co-sponsored by Newman’s Own, Inc. and the Corporation for National and Community Service and is intended to serve as an impetus to increase and support volunteerism in urban areas.

Since 1994, Paul Newman, Newman’s Own, Inc. and the Newman’s Own Foundation have been leading supporters of Make A Difference Day and together have contributed $1.6 million to Make A Difference Day projects.
Since 1992, USA WEEKEND has conducted the nationwide initiative, Make A Difference Day, held every fourth Saturday in October, to encourage citizens of communities nationwide to help their neighbors. More than three million volunteers participated in the event last October. During the past 18 years, the day has empowered tens of millions of volunteers to bring about change in their own neighborhoods via their altruistic efforts. It is the largest single day of volunteerism.
