Sonatype Announces Significant Enhancements to Maven Central, Industry’s Leading Repository of Software Components

Expanded Investment to Benefit Both the Open Source Community and Enterprise Software Developers

SILVER SPRING, Md.--()--Sonatype, the company that is transforming software development, today announced major enhancements to Maven Central, the primary cloud-based repository of software components, used by developers around the world. The enhancements will improve the performance and security of the software exchange, and provide the community with a broad range of critical statistics on project and component usage.

Sonatype’s planned enhancements to Maven Central include:

  • Mirror sites in Europe and Asia to improve performance worldwide
  • Enhanced infrastructure to provide high availability
  • Streamlined facilities for submitting components
  • Comprehensive statistics on software projects and components
  • Accelerated investment in the site interface and repository management functionality

“I’m pleased that we are able to make these enhancements to Maven Central,” said Jason van Zyl, Sonatype’s Founder and CTO. “Sonatype places enormous value on the collaborative relationship that we have with the open source community, and we are proud that we are able to deliver even greater resources to software developers moving forward.”

Since its launch in 2003, Maven Central has grown to become the industry’s principal resource for the exchange of Java artifacts. The demand for efficient, component-based software development has driven an explosion in the use of Maven Central. Each week Maven Central receives more than 70 million hits from 250 thousand developers in 26 thousand unique organizations (including 78 of the Global 100). Over the last several years, demand has more than doubled each year with 2010 traffic expected to reach more than 4 billion hits.

“Sonatype’s innovation and investment in open source has been of great value to software developers around the world,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. “Maven Central is but one example of the financial and technical contributions from Sonatype which are having an impact on the industry.”

Enhancements to Maven Central will begin October 19th when the mirror site in Europe will go live. At the same time, submissions to Maven Central will leverage a new streamlined process using Sonatype’s Nexus open source repository manager, enabling improved security and more comprehensive project statistics. Hundreds of open source projects already use Sonatype’s Nexus Professional repository manager to efficiently manage their artifact repositories and provision them to Maven Central.

“Sonatype takes our support of the community and our stewardship of Maven Central very seriously,” said Wayne Jackson, Sonatype CEO. “We have invested millions of dollars and countless hours to make Maven Central a reliable resource for the open source community and software developers around the world. These latest enhancements reflect our continued commitment to this mission.”

Among the foundations that rely on Sonatype infrastructure are The Apache Software Foundation, Codehaus, FuseSource and Java.Net.
