DALLAS--()--At its annual Dallas Quill awards gala on September 29 at the Belo Mansion, the Dallas chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC Dallas) named Melinda Guravich its 2010 Communicator of the Year (COTY), honored Kim Linnen with the Pegasus Outstanding Volunteer Award, and presented Dallas/Fort Worth-area communicators 24 Awards of Excellence and 23 Awards of Merit. Bill Lively, president and CEO of the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee, served as the event’s keynote speaker.
“Involvement in IABC Dallas is the best investment I’ve made in my career”
The COTY award is presented by the chapter to one communications professional each year whose professional achievements and service to the profession are a cut above the rest. Gayle Goodman, 2009 COTY and principal of Goodman-Lynch Communications, made the presentation. Three senior-level, accredited communicators within IABC’s global organization who judged this year’s COTY finalists said Guravich’s portfolio demonstrated a commitment to extensive professional development and a focus on growth within her career, using her knowledge, expertise and relationship-building skills to successfully influence. The judges were also impressed by the broad range of activities in which Guravich participates, complimenting her on a balanced approach to giving back to the profession.
Guravich is president-elect of IABC Dallas. As a global communications and CSR consultant, she provides a global perspective to the challenges of international communications for North American companies, most recently as manager of brand communication at Mary Kay Inc. Guravich has received Dallas Quill Awards of Excellence for international communications planning and employee communications. She earned an MBA in international management from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Ariz. and two undergraduate degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. Other COTY finalists were Richard Buse, owner of Richard S. Buse Communication Services and Peggy Norton, Corporate Employee Communications Manager at Verizon.
“Involvement in IABC Dallas is the best investment I’ve made in my career,” Guravich said. “In any economic climate, IABC offers tremendous benefits. Ask members who are engaged in our chapter and they’ll tell you they receive consistent return on their membership with ongoing professional development, career connections, lifelong friendships and personal satisfaction.”
Kim Linnen received the Pegasus Outstanding Volunteer Award for 2010, an award presented each year by the IABC Dallas president. The award recognizes outstanding service and dedication to the chapter. Linnen co-chaired the 2010 IABC Dallas Quill Awards, heading up the event and sponsorship planning for this year's event. According to chapter president Donna Itzoe Long, "Kim embodies the compassionate professional, and this carries over into her volunteer activities. Not only is she continually exceeding expectations, she manages all of it with warmth and a great sense of humor." Linnen is the Metro Dallas Branch Manager for The BOSS Group.
This year, 28 different communication professionals or teams were honored with Quill Awards for their entries in three divisions that cover communications management, communications skills and communications creativity. Each entry was judged independently based on a points-based rating system by IABC chapters in other states.
