Evidox Expands East Coast Presence with Opening of New York City Office

Electronic discovery firm brings legal-centric approach to mid-town Manhattan

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Evidox Corporation, a leading provider of electronic discovery services for law firms and corporate clients, today announced the opening of a New York City office at 845 Third Avenue, 6th Floor, New York, NY 10022.

“Several of our largest clients have a major presence in New York and we can now serve those clients even better by having a New York office. We expect to leverage these relationships to develop new business in New York.”

Evidox was founded in 2006 by James Berriman, a former AmLaw 100 litigator, and Lynn Turgeon, a former AmLaw 100 litigation paralegal. Before founding Evidox, they built and ran the largest in-house litigation technology operation in New England. They founded Evidox because they perceived an urgent need for ediscovery services conducted from the perspective of the litigator rather than the technician.

Electronic discovery, or "ediscovery," involves collecting, processing, hosting, reviewing, and producing electronic evidence in the context of lawsuits and investigations. Although it requires extensive technical capabilities, it remains governed by traditional legal constraints of relevance, privilege, and the avoidance of undue burden -- constraints that may not be well understood by companies with a purely techno-centric focus.

"Ediscovery is not a technical issue. It is a legal issue with a technical solution," said Mr. Berriman. "The attorney, not the technician, controls the scope and cost." Mr. Berriman notes that this approach allows their clients to drive ediscovery costs down while complying with the legal and ethical requirements of the ediscovery process. To further this philosophy, the Evidox team includes six members who formerly worked in law firms, including three with law degrees, in addition to its employees with technical backgrounds.

Mr. Berriman has been developing litigation-technology systems since 1982. In 1990, he joined Goodwin Procter LLP as a litigation attorney and began incorporating technology into his practice. In 1999, the firm asked him to supervise the use of litigation technology firm-wide. As the founder and Director of the firm’s Litigation Technology Group he grew the operation to a team of 15 specialists, coded and implemented the firm's litigation case-management system, and established the firm's scanning and digitizing labs, ediscovery review facilities, and trial technology systems. Mr. Berriman has conducted electronic evidence presentations in a number of prominent trials.

Ms. Turgeon was formerly a litigation paralegal at Browning-Ferris Industries and a senior litigation paralegal at Goodwin Procter. As a result of her extensive background in the use of litigation database systems to support large discovery projects, she became Manager of Litigation Technology at Goodwin Procter. She implemented the firm's image database capabilities, its ediscovery production lines, and its native file processing capabilities. She administered the firm's litigation-support extranet systems, trained and supervised the ediscovery project managers and oversaw lab operations, and was responsible for attorney training. She is one of the few Summation Certified Trainers in New England.

"Opening a New York office is the logical next step for Evidox," said Ms. Turgeon. "Several of our largest clients have a major presence in New York and we can now serve those clients even better by having a New York office. We expect to leverage these relationships to develop new business in New York." She notes that Evidox has performed ediscovery processing and hosting on hundreds of projects, ranging from same-day emergencies to very large multi-terabyte cases, and that she built the Evidox team to include production managers, project managers, computer engineers, QC engineers, trainers, and analysts.
