Adessi: Family Men Go for Gold at Children’s Centre Sports Day

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The role that family men play in children’s lives across Sunderland is being celebrated this Saturday at a special Children’s Centre sports day event.

“Male carers play an extremely important role in a child’s life so events which encourage fathers to interact with their children, such as the Children’s Centre Dads’ Day, are a fantastic way to support and celebrate their involvement with their children.”

The free Dads’ Day event at Sunderland Children’s Centre (Dubmire Primary School) aims to bring families together to celebrate all male carers, including dads, grandads and step-fathers.

The family fun day, which is being supported by Groundwork North East, will see the family men take part in a series of traditional sports day challenges from the egg and spoon race and the leaky bucket game to dads’ skipping races and Sparrowhawk, Swallow and Honey Bee games.

The children will also have the chance to enjoy different arts and crafts and to make a commemorative mug for their dad to take home.

Raj Singh, Extended Services Manager within Sunderland City Council’s Children’s Services, said: “Male carers play an extremely important role in a child’s life so events which encourage fathers to interact with their children, such as the Children’s Centre Dads’ Day, are a fantastic way to support and celebrate their involvement with their children.

“Many men can be put off from visiting a Children’s Centre as they assume they are just for women. However, dads and male carers are welcome to attend all play activities and a number of services and activities such as Dads and Kids groups which are designed to encourage fathers to participate in parenting, are now available.

The free Children’s Centre Sports Day is open to all family men living in the Hetton, Houghton and Monument area and will run from 10am to 12noon on Saturday 28 August 2010 at Sunderland Children’s Centre (Dubmire Primary School).

Sunderland’s 17 Children’s Centres bring together health services, early education, childcare, parenting support for both mams and dads and help for parents looking to find work or training. The centres are developing strong links with local organisations and community groups to help provide every child in Sunderland with the best possible start in life.
