ThingMagic Tops ABI Research Embedded Passive UHF RFID Reader Module Vendor Matrix

Mercury5 Embedded RFID Reader Family and Development Tools Recognized for Innovation and Implementation Strengths

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ThingMagic, Inc., a leading developer of RFID technology, today announced it has been ranked in the overall top position of the Embedded Passive UHF Reader Module Vendor Matrix1 released by ABI Research. ABI Research Vendor Matrices are analytical tools developed to provide a clear understanding of vendors’ positions in specific markets, assessing vendors’ “innovation” and “implementation” across several criteria.

“We’re honored to be recognized as a market leader by ABI Research, and look forward to continuing to provide our customers and partners with the broadest choice of RFID reader engines and architectural guidance to ensure system performance and solution optimization.”

“Our clients and other RFID adopters are looking for informed guidance about RFID vendors and products, so they can make intelligent buying decisions, gain an independent perspective, and understand the strengths of key players and their offerings. ABI Research points to high performance and quality as key competitive differentiators for ThingMagic, resulting in the highest rating on both the innovation and implementation measures of our embedded passive UHF RFID reader module vendor matrix,” said Michael Liard, ABI Research Practice Director, RFID.

ThingMagic products evaluated include:

  • The Mercury5e (M5e), a one watt, credit card sized reader, ideal for adding UHF RFID read and write capabilities to a wide range of fixed and mobile readers in a variety of form factors.
  • The M5e-Compact (M5e-C), roughly half the size of the M5e, is ideal for solutions where small size and low power consumption are essential, such handhelds, mobile printers and any device that trends towards size because of desire to miniaturize.
  • The Mercury Developer’s Kit, which contains everything needed to begin reading and writing RFID tags using a ThingMagic reader module, including sample applications, sample RFID tags, and ThingMagic’s Reader Assistant graphical command and demonstration utility.
  • Embedded Reader Module Components, including a four port, stackable multiplexer, enabling an M5e reader to support up to eight antennas; a low profile heatsink to accommodate high temperature environments; and a power/interface board with a USB port and support for a wide range of AC and DC power supplies.

Considered a competitive advantage by ABI, ThingMagic’s broad application and vertical market leadership is evidenced by the use of its RFID reader modules by many leading device manufacturers and solution providers. Examples include stationary and mobile printers from Zebra Technologies and Lexmark, handheld devices offered by PanMobil, Nordic ID and MaxID, and ruggedized readers and RFID portal products offered by Venture Research. Further, ThingMagic’s family of finished RFID readers built using the M5e and M5e-C modules are used in a variety of solutions including RFID portals from Jamison Door, Tool Link from Ford and DeWALT, and many other innovative offerings from ThingMagic’s network of partners to the automotive, consumer, healthcare, industrial automation, manufacturing, and retail markets.

“The use of embedded RFID to enable the tracking of new asset classes and new applications is a very exciting market trend and one that has tremendous growth opportunity as we explore the convergence of RFID, wireless and sensor technologies,” said Yael Maguire, co-founder and CTO of ThingMagic. “We’re honored to be recognized as a market leader by ABI Research, and look forward to continuing to provide our customers and partners with the broadest choice of RFID reader engines and architectural guidance to ensure system performance and solution optimization.”
