Filmmaker to Visit New York State to Screen New Education Documentary at Department of Education and West Point

New Film, the 21st Century Solution, Models a Successful American School and Suggests Reform Measures to Improve Student Achievement

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Global education expert, venture capitalist and entrepreneur Bob Compton will screen his newest documentary film, The 21st Century Solution, twice in New York State on November 12-13. Compton will visit the New York City Department of Education (NY DOE) and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to show the film.

“The New Economy: Building the Workforce of the Future”

This film reveals a charter school in Tucson, Ariz. that provides a model for educating American students at a globally-competitive level. Compton believes this is one of the world’s most effective secondary schools. Called BASIS, the school demonstrates that American students are capable of competing academically with the best in the world given the right curriculum, the right teachers, the right inspiration and expectations for success.

The 21st Century Solution is a sequel to Compton’s first documentary film Two Million Minutes: A Global Examination, which analyzed global education, comparing how high school students in the U.S., India and China prioritized their time. Ultimately, the film revealed a crisis in American education, as a result of less time spent in the classroom and studying, less educated instructors and a culture that doesn’t recognize and reward intellectual achievement to the same extent as many foreign cultures.

“I support what Joel Klein and the NY DOE are doing to improve education for students, and I wanted to share my experience with BASIS to demonstrate that such a model exists and is successful,” said Compton. “BASIS had found a way to provide a world-class education to its students, and we must determine how to allow more schools to offer a world class education to American children. Our country’s economic future depends upon it.”

Compton will screen the film privately at the NY DOE on November 12. The screening at West Point will take place as part of a larger, invitation-only Investment in America Forum, titled “The New Economy: Building the Workforce of the Future” on November 13. The Investment in America Forum is a partnership between the Leader to Leader Institute, the United States Army and The Conference Board. Additional information on the program is available at http://www.conference-board.org/events/iaf/.
