Sarasota Yacht Club Celebrates ‘Topping Off’ Construction Milestone

New Waterfront Facility on Track for February 2010 Completion

SARASOTA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After celebrating a “topping off” construction milestone, Sarasota Yacht Club (SYC) is moving toward completion of its sparkling new waterfront clubhouse in February 2010.

“Then, we will remove the tent and complete the landscaping and other site work.”

Yacht club members and Sarasota civic leaders will hold an evening reception on August 28 after construction crews finished the highest point of the 47-foot tall structure. A palm tree and American flag were raised to the roof to mark the accomplishment.

“With its coastal contemporary design, sail-like fabric roof and modern glass and stucco exterior, our new yacht club will be a beautiful addition to the downtown Sarasota skyline,” said SYC Commodore Bill Chastain. “Our architects understood our objectives and designed what we believe will be the most spectacular yacht club facility in the country.”

Sarasota architect Tom Denslow, lead designer, DSDG, Inc., oriented the new 23,500-square-foot facility to take advantage of the club’s waterfront location on Sarasota Bay. With its elevation over a 177-space parking garage, the clubhouse provided panoramic views from throughout the building, including the indoor-outdoor dining hall and the formal Neptune Lounge.

“This a very versatile facility capable of seating nearly 600 people at a single time in ten different areas,” noted Chastain. “We predict it will be the most popular place in Sarasota for parties, receptions, weddings and other social and business events.”

DSDG incorporated a variety of nautical touches through the clubhouse. “From the main entrance, a 90-foot lobby extends through building, giving club members a direct view of the main dock in the marina area,” Denslow said. Overhead, a 30-foot high translucent ceiling will be covered with a durable space age fabric used in Denver International Airport.

Sarasota-based Tandem Construction began work on the new facility in November 2008, managing the 300-plus total project workforce. “It’s special for us to be part of achieving their vision,” said Nathan Renner, project manager.

Designed to withstand 130-mph winds, the building incorporates numerous environmentally friendly features, including natural skylights, recycled materials, thick insulation and a highly efficient air-conditioning system.

Since the former SYC facility was torn down last year, the club has been operating in an air-conditioned tent on the three-acre site. “Once the new facility has been completed, the club’s activities will move inside,” said Renner. “Then, we will remove the tent and complete the landscaping and other site work.”

Founded in 1926, the Sarasota Yacht Club is one of the original 13 members of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs.
