ORLANDO, Fla.--()--A few years ago, a life science cluster was a dream for Orlando. Now, that dream is a reality.
In addition to having two of the top hospital systems in the country – Florida Hospital and Orlando Health…Orlando is now home to the world’s newest life science cluster anchored by the new University of Central Florida College of Medicine – with its inaugural class of 40 students with full 4 year scholarships (a first of its kind) starting this fall – and the recently-opened Burnham Institute for Medical Research at Lake Nona. In addition, Nemours Children’s Hospital is under construction and there are plans for a VA Hospital, University of Florida Research Center and M. D. Anderson – Orlando Cancer Research Institute – all in Lake Nona near Orlando International Airport. By year ten of operation, it’s expected that Orlando’s emerging life science cluster will create 30,000 jobs and $7.6 billion in economic impact.
Several Orlando experts (including Thad Seymour – Lake Nona, home to Orlando’s new ‘medical city’; Dr. Gregory Roth – Burnham Institute at Lake Nona; Dr. Cheryl Baker – M. D. Anderson – Orlando Cancer Research Institute) will be in attendance at BIO and available for interviews and to share story ideas.
