“Kaplan University understands the importance of providing adults with an education that will best prepare them for employment opportunities in growing industries,” said David Clinefelter, Ph.D., Kaplan University’s Provost. “Health information professionals play a significant role in the collection and maintenance of data for patients, and our new associate’s degree program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain the type of education and real-world experience valued by employers.”
The U.S. Department of Labor predicts jobs in health information will grow faster than average through the year 2016, with health care information technicians and administrators working in a broad spectrum of health care settings. Employees’ work often involves various aspects of coding, billing, insurance, records management and data collection. Students in Kaplan University’s Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Technology program learn skills such as abstracting health records, compiling reports on health care services, assigning code numbers to diagnoses and responding to inquiries for patient health information. Students also learn how to review health records for accreditation, supervise human resources and analyze health records content for accuracy.
A blend of online coursework and on-ground clinical experiences, Kaplan University’s 91-credit-hour program offers students the convenience and flexibility of studying online, yet also provides them with the opportunity to gain rigorous, on-the-job experience. Curriculum includes completion of clinical training and an externship at a health care facility prior to graduation.
Enrollment for the program is now open and classes begin on April 15. For more information, visit www.online.kaplanuniversity.edu.
