Free Disaster Safety Fair Supports the Great Southern California ShakeOut

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A 7-foot-tall, baseball-loving dinosaur taught local schoolchildren how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” today to show how they can protect themselves and their families when the Big One strikes.

Led by the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes’ baseball team mascot “Tremor” and Rancho Cucamonga Fire District Chief Peter Bryan, the drill supported the Great Southern California ShakeOut – the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history.

With earthquakes an inevitable part of Southern California’s future, organizers of the Great Shakeout at Victoria Gardens and the City of Rancho Cucamonga Earthquake Preparedness Fair armed local residents with information and demonstrations on how to survive a major quake.

The free event at the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center kicked off with the children’s earthquake drill. Highlights of the fair included the “Quake Cottage,” a trailer exhibit that allows participants to climb aboard and safely experience an 8.0 earthquake, search dog demonstrations, rescue equipment displays and the Farmers Insurance Customer Care Vehicle, where children could have photographs and fingerprints taken for identification kits.

The event was co-sponsored by the Rancho Cucamonga Emergency Preparedness and Response Program and the Insurance Information Network of California.

“We want to stress the importance of both physical and financial preparation for disasters,” said IINC Executive Director Candysse Miller. “Understanding your insurance coverage and how to reduce your risks before disaster strikes helps to pave the path to recovery.”

“Being prepared is essential to surviving a major disaster,” said Breanna Medina, Rancho Cucamonga’s Emergency Preparedness Program coordinator. “At the fair, we provided the key information on earthquake preparedness for the whole family.”

The Great Southern California ShakeOut is a week of special events featuring the largest earthquake drill in the United States, organized to inspire Southern Californians to prepare for big earthquakes. The ShakeOut drill occurred simultaneously in houses, businesses and public spaces throughout Southern California at 10 a.m. Thursday, with more than 5 million Californians participating.
