Gennum Delivers Industry’s First 120-Meter
3Gb/s Video HD and SDI Transmission Solution
Cable Equalizer Achieves Unprecedented Performance Accelerating 3Gb/s Deployment for Video Broadcast Applications
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(IBC 2007) - Continuing to drive the adoption of 3Gb/s (gigabits per second) video transport solutions, Gennum Corporation (TSX:GND) has broken the 100-meter barrier for 3Gb/s transmission with its new adaptive cable equalizer. The new multi-rate equalizer achieves an unprecedented 120 meters for 3Gb/s transmission. This enables broadcast equipment manufacturers to meet longer cable specifications while delivering the high performance customers demand. The additional distance is critical as the broadcast industry transitions its infrastructure to 3Gb/s yet wants to leverage their existing cables and equipment investments. The new equalizer is being demonstrated at Gennum’s booth at the International Broadcaster’s Convention (Booth 10.119) being held this week in Amsterdam, along with a variety of other 3Gb/s solutions from Gennum.
“Broadcast studios are making significant investments as they convert to 3Gb/s and cabling is a huge expense,” said Martin Rofheart, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Analog and Mixed Signal Division for Gennum. “Our new equalizer enables customers to leverage the existing cabling they have by providing a solution that delivers the 3Gb/s and HD performance they need at considerably longer distances.”
Equalizers are used to equalize and restore signals over co-axial cable for applications such as digital video routers, video production switchers, distribution amplifiers, cameras, monitors, VTRs and professional A/V systems. Previous solutions have been unable to drive 3Gb/s data beyond 100 meters, rendering existing cabling infrastructure ineffective. Studios have been forced to choose between adding expensive cabling or postponing their move to applications requiring 3Gb/s.
GS2974B Equalizer Extends 3Gb/s Range
Gennum’s new GS2974B equalizer provides support for SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) 424M, SMPTE 292M and SMPTE 259M. With the GS2974B, Gennum has exceeded the 100-meter barrier for 3Gb/s transmission enabling an easy transition for studios. In addition, the multi-rate GS2974B extends the cable length for HD-SDI at 1.485Gb/s to 160 meters. These innovations have been made possible through patent-pending changes to the key blocks within the equalizer.
Gennum Extends Comprehensive 3Gb/s Portfolio
As the leading provider of video cable equalizers, the GS2974B extends Gennum’s current offerings for video broadcast applications, including cable drivers, reclockers, serializers, deserializers and timing products. Gennum has a strong history in video transport, having delivered the industry’s first HDTV transport solutions as well as driving the standards for next-generation 3Gb/s standards and unveiling the industry’s first 3Gb/s transport products.
Availability
The GS2974B, available in a 16 QFN package, is sampling now with production expected in the fourth quarter of 2007.
