Driving Down Emissions with an Accurate Dose of Diesel

Siemens VDO Debuts Diesel Dosing Aftertreatment System

DETROIT--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Siemens VDO is helping diesel customers meet impending emissions requirements across the globe with its diesel dosing exhaust aftertreatment system. Using the company's vast fuel injection experience, with its proven DEKA injection products, the diesel dosing injector provides a highly efficient spray pattern for optimal regeneration of the particulate filter, helping to reduce particulates, while improving fuel efficiency.

“Siemens VDO's innovative diesel dosing injection system will help our customers meet upcoming emissions requirements in regional markets across the globe”

"Siemens VDO's innovative diesel dosing injection system will help our customers meet upcoming emissions requirements in regional markets across the globe," said Siemens VDO Business Development Manager Dave Childs. "The company's diesel aftertreatment system also provides our customers with a cost efficient solution – it is approximately 30 percent less than other comparable solutions on the market today."

Siemens VDO applied its DEKA injection technology to the diesel aftertreatment process to produce a simpler, more reliable and efficient, cost-effective exhaust aftertreatment system. The aftertreatment solution, which is independent of the engine and requires no change to engine architecture, uses a fuel injector in combination with a high temperature spray nozzle valve to directly spray a precise dose of diesel fuel into - more - the exhaust before it enters the particulate trap. The injectors unique patent pending nozzle design is engineered with an outward opening device, creating a self-cleaning feature to prevent coking build up. This poppet design also optimizes the diesel spray pattern to evenly distribute the fuel for efficient regeneration of the particulate filter and, depending on a customer's design, may eliminate the need for a mixing device, helping to significantly drive the system's cost down.

The diesel dosing system is due to go in series production on a light duty North American application in 2010.

Siemens VDO is a leading international automotive electronics and mechatronic supplier. The group is part of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) and generated sales of $12.120 billion (€10.017 billion) in the 2006 business year (ending Sept. 30).
