Last month, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved a plan to provide financial support from the Federal Universal Service Fund (USF) to provide telecommunications services to persons who were displaced from their homes as a result of Hurricane Katrina. In response to the FCC's request for wireless support, TracFone Wireless created a program to assist Hurricane Katrina evacuees and launched a toll-free number 1-800-800-9873 where evacuees can inquire about eligibility and get more information on the free service.
"A significant number of people were impacted by this disaster and many of them were our customers," said FJ Pollak, president and CEO of TracFone Wireless. "It's our goal to offer support to the evacuees during this time of need by providing a wireless phone to ease their communication problems so they can begin to rebuild their lives. This grant, provided by the FCC, is a good example of governmental agencies working with corporate America to help those less fortunate during hardships."
In order to be eligible for the free cell phone, the applicant must have lived in an area affected by Hurricane Katrina, as determined by FEMA, and have been approved by FEMA to receive emergency housing assistance. Applicant must provide TracFone with a copy of the FEMA grant letter advising them they are eligible to receive support, present a copy of a Federal or state-issued I.D. and must answer eligibility questions in writing. Information can be faxed to 1-800-927-2757 for review and approval. After the information is verified, TracFone will ship the package to the applicant's current address.
The TracFone Katrina Lifeline Package includes 300 minutes of airtime, one year of service, battery and charger. Customers who purchase additional airtime during their service year will receive twice the amount of minutes for each airtime card purchased or half-price minutes. To assist potential recipients, TracFone's toll-free access number provides an easy-to-follow recorded message with options to repeat the informational steps for clarification.
