"This project is a great example of our company's commitment to NYK's Green Policy," stated Tom Simmers, President and CEO of Yusen Terminals Inc. "With NOx and PM emissions 65 percent and 80 percent lower than a traditional off-road unit, these LNG units will significantly reduce emissions from our waterfront operations."
“I applaud YTI for their early commitment to work with Kalmar Industries, Cummins Engine Company, SES and ALT to develop a new clean air technology for use on the docks”
Kalmar Industries Corp. designed and built these first units and is now the world's first provider of the lowest-emission marine terminal tractor technology available in the United States. Don Lawrence, Western Regional Manager for Kalmar, commented, "Although YTI is the first to begin operating our new LNG marine terminal tractor option, we have already filled other orders for this unit and expect several more in the coming months. The combined air benefits of these clean burning units will be fantastic."
Partnering with YTI on this project since June 2003 has been SES Terminal LLC ("SES") and Applied LNG Technologies ("ALT"). SES, a joint venture company between the Mitsubishi Corporation and ConocoPhillips, plans to construct an LNG receiving terminal in the Port of Long Beach. ALT is the nation's largest supplier of clean burning transportation LNG.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District ("SCAQMD") has contributed to the funding of this project through its Carl Moyer Air Quality Standards Attainment program. SCAQMD Executive Director Barry Wallerstein noted, "With tens of millions of dollars in grant funds available every year, the District hopes to encourage similar ground breaking and important projects such as this. The increased use of LNG in heavy-duty applications is an important strategy in the AQMD's plans to improve air quality in the South Coast Air Basin."
In addition to the Carl Moyer grant, the Port of Los Angeles, through its Air Quality Mitigation Fund, has approved funding towards the purchase of additional LNG tractors and towards installation of an LNG fuel station.
"I applaud YTI for their early commitment to work with Kalmar Industries, Cummins Engine Company, SES and ALT to develop a new clean air technology for use on the docks," commented Los Angeles Harbor Commission Vice President Jerilyn Lopez Mendoza. "From their two years of hard work to bring this important new low-emission technology to market, it is now available for use by others in the harbor and in other intermodal operations."
Tom Giles, CEO for SES, stated, "We are excited about the delivery of the world's first LNG terminal tractors at YTI. SES is committed to provide a stable and low-cost supply of LNG when SES' LNG import terminal opens in 2009."
