| Sonic(R) Enables TiVo(R) Series2(TM) Subscribers with Home Media Option(TM) to View Recorded Programming on Laptops, Burn Recorded Programming to DVD on their PCs |
“TiVo enthusiasts have always been able to record and watch their favorite shows at home, and now they can watch them on the go”
Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ:SNIC), the leader in DVD creation software, announced today that it has teamed with TiVo (NASDAQ:TIVO), Inc., the creator of television services for digital video recorders (DVRs), to allow TiVo Series2 subscribers with Home Media Option to burn recorded programming onto DVD using Sonic MyDVD(R) and play their TiVo content on their PCs wherever they go with Sonic CinePlayer(TM). The combination of TiVo and Sonic technologies will, for the first time, allow TiVo subscribers to take advantage of their PC to access content on their TiVo DVR, burn to DVD, and enjoy TiVo on the go. The new software is being demonstrated by TiVo and Sonic at CES.
"Our subscribers love the TiVo experience so much that they don't want it limited to the living room," said Brodie Keast, Senior Vice President and General Manager, TiVo service. "Working with Sonic, we are giving our subscribers the ability to use their PCs to easily extend the TiVo experience and take it with them wherever they go."
Designed to work with TiVo's Home Media Option and Series2 DVRs, the new TiVo-enabled MyDVD and CinePlayer software makes it easy to find the "Now Playing" programs available on any networked TiVo DVR in the home. Once selected, the secure and encrypted TiVo programs are transferred to the PC, where a TiVo Content Security Key is used to unlock the files for playback or burning, preventing files from being shared online outside of the user's home network or online.
"TiVo enthusiasts have always been able to record and watch their favorite shows at home, and now they can watch them on the go," said Mark Ely, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy for Sonic. "With MyDVD and CinePlayer, TiVo subscribers can not only take their shows with them on their laptop PCs, but they can also burn them to DVDs for maximum portability. We are extremely pleased to be working with TiVo, the leading innovator in DVR technology, to move the TiVo experience from the home to anywhere a PC or DVD disc can go."
TiVo expects to begin selling bundles of the TiVo-enabled Sonic software and TiVo Content Security Key to TiVo subscribers in the Fall of 2004.
