Slic Network Solutions Picks Alloptic for High-Speed Connectivity Project in New York State; Alloptic's GigaForce Selected for Options, Bandwidth and Better ROI

LIVERMORE, Calif.--()--March 31, 2003--Alloptic, Inc., the world leader in providing Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (ePON) solutions, today announced that Slic Network Solutions, Inc., a subsidiary of Nicholville Telephone Company, has chosen Alloptic's GigaForce(TM) system to implement high-speed data connectivity in the community of Massena, NY.

"After an exhaustive review of available technologies, Alloptic's GigaForce system proved to be the ideal fit for our service offerings. The superior bandwidth and Ethernet based system provides us a 'future proof' access infrastructure," says Chief Technology Officer Phil Wagschal at Slic Network. "Alloptic provides us flexibility for service development as we move forward and allows us to provide a leading edge access network while cost effectively utilizing our embedded core network."

Massena is a town of approximately 13,000 residents, adjacent to the US-Canadian border on the St. Lawrence River. With a strong economy based on manufacturing and retail, Massena is now pursuing a progressive development strategy designed to encourage high-tech business development in the town.

"Communities, like Massena, clearly recognize the value of a leading edge communications network," said Michael Moone, president and CEO of Alloptic. "The benefits extend well beyond quality of life at home and become the cornerstone for economic development within the community. Today, Nicholville Telephone and Slic Network Solutions, will be providing its customers unmatched bandwidth."

The Alloptic solution is being deployed as part of a public-private partnership between the community of Massena and Slic Network Solutions, Nicholville Telephone's commercial network service subsidiary. By sharing resources and working towards the common goal of achieving an advanced, high-tech community, the partners are installing a fiber optic network designed to deliver advanced broadband and Internet services to the town's end-users.

The initial phase of the Massena project includes dedicated data connections to 16 municipal sites, including the Village and Town Offices, Police Department, Department of Public Works, Airport, Library, and Water Treatment Plant, which are physically situated in various corners of the community. The network will enable fiber-based broadband connections for transmission of high-speed data, lightning quick Internet access, and robust e-mail applications to each location at speeds up to 100 Mbps. It will also offer the capability to centralize data storage and retrieval, and will create the foundation for a private voice network between locations.

Subsequent phases of service deployment will target small- to mid-size commercial and public entities such as retail, legal, accounting, medical and hotel operations as well as multi-tenant buildings. Slic is currently installing and testing project hardware for the first phase of the project and will complete network configuration and end-user connections next month. Data connectivity along with Internet access is scheduled to begin in May.

Currently in commercial deployment at locations worldwide, Alloptic's GigaForce system is the industry's first Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (ePON). With a robust architecture that supports both business and residential services, the GigaForce product line delivers data, TDM and IP Voice, and RF and IP Video services over a converged, high-density, ultra high-speed platform.

GigaForce features the edgeG.E.A.R.(TM) central office chassis and a complete family of optical networking units designed for the wide range of fiber-to-the-premises applications. Incorporating units for residences, businesses and multi-dwelling units, this single system allows service operators to deliver the full range of broadband services to their entire base of customers
