Capella University Enters New Public Service Leadership Market; Launches Five New Public Service Educational Offerings
New market features pioneering multidisciplinary approach to public service education
MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Capella University (www.capella.edu), an accredited* online university, announced that it has entered a new educational market, Public Service Leadership, and established a new School of Public Service Leadership. Capella’s public service leadership programs feature an innovative multidisciplinary educational approach that brings together faculty and professionals from public administration, public safety, and health care, and leverages online technology to develop the cross-functional leadership skills required to successfully address today’s increasingly complex public service challenges.
“Today’s public sector challenges call for leaders with the skills and abilities to find new approaches to serving and protecting the public”
Addressing an unmet need in public service education
“Today’s public sector challenges call for leaders with the skills and abilities to find new approaches to serving and protecting the public,” said Christopher Cassirer, ScD, MPH, president of Capella University. “Capella’s School of Public Service Leadership is addressing this unmet, growing need in public service education. Complex public service challenges involve multiple issues that require a different set of skills than previous generations of public servants. Public administration, public safety, and health care leaders frequently need to collaborate to address issues and challenges that cross jurisdictional and organizational lines, yet educational institutions continue to educate these professionals in separate programs and schools. Capella is improving our students’ capacity to become successful public service leaders, benefiting their individual organizations, the public as a whole, and their own careers.”
Capella’s leading edge approach to public service education
“We have developed a new educational approach that is designed to develop the skills needed by today’s public service professionals,” said Charles Tiffin, PhD, faculty chair of Capella’s Public Safety programs and a Fulbright Scholar with more than 25 years of law enforcement experience. “Our advanced learning technologies provide students with opportunities to test real-world scenarios, collaborate on case studies, and have in-depth discussions with colleagues across all public service disciplines, and from jurisdictions throughout the United States and the world. And because we are online, we have few geographic limitations when recruiting faculty. As a result, we have been able to attract exceptional scholar-practitioners who have tackled challenging public service problems themselves within such regional, national, and international organizations as the World Health Organization, the FBI, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Armed Forces, and major emergency response agencies, police departments, and health care and hospital systems.”
Five new public service leadership educational offerings
New Public Service Leadership offerings include three new graduate degree programs, a Doctor of Public Administration (DPA), a Master of Public Administration (MPA), and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Nurse Educator and Nurse Educator Bridge specializations. New undergraduate offerings include a Bachelor of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Business, Health Care Administration specialization. Capella’s integrated approach to public service leadership also leverages the university’s strong BS, MS, and PhD programs in Public Safety and graduate specializations in Health Care Administration.
Capella now offers an opportunity for public service professionals to earn bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in public administration, public safety, and health care online, and to build lasting networks with professionals in a variety of public service professions and at various points in their careers. Students at all degree levels and from all public service professions will benefit from Capella’s expert faculty, advanced learning technologies, and multidisciplinary public services approach. There are more than 7 million professionals in the public service related professions served by Capella, and postsecondary enrollment in this market is more than 400,000 students.
Meeting a critical need for new public service leaders
“Capella’s new approach to public service education comes at a critical time,” said Dr. Cassirer. “Many of our current public service leaders are nearing retirement. At the federal level alone, it’s estimated that more than half the supervisors will be eligible to retire over the next several years. At the same time, President Obama has put out a national call for Americans to serve their communities and for government agencies to work with nonprofit organizations and the private sector to learn from each other’s successes. We believe the multidisciplinary approach of our new School of Public Service Leadership will help answer that call, by providing up-and-coming public service leaders with the skills they need to address today’s complex public sector challenges.”
