VantageScore CreditGauge™ June 2026: Consumer Credit Healthy as Borrowers Maintain Payment Discipline

  • Average VantageScore 4.0 Credit Score Increased to 702
  • Credit Card Delinquency Rates Across All Past Due Categories Improved Compared to June 2025
  • Overall Credit Utilization Rates Down Compared to May 2026 and June 2025

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The average VantageScore credit score increased in June 2026 as consumer credit remained generally healthy, according to the latest edition of CreditGauge™ from VantageScore. Serious delinquencies remained stable year-over-year and below pre-pandemic levels, while credit card delinquency rates improved across all stages compared to June 2025. At the same time, overall credit utilization declined from both month-over-month and year-over-year in June 2026.

“Although pockets of stress persist in certain segments, our June analysis indicates that most consumers are managing their credit responsibly and maintaining good credit health,” said Atif Mirza, EVP and Chief Digital and Insights Officer at VantageScore. “Between the positive employment picture and healthy household balance sheets, consumers are looking strong heading into the second half of 2026.”

AVERAGE VANTAGESCORE 4.0 CREDIT SCORE INCREASED TO 702: In June 2026, the average VantageScore 4.0 credit score increased one point to 702, reversing the modest dip observed late last year and returning to its highest level in the past 12 months. This suggests improved consumer credit quality, likely due to the strong labor market, which is helping households stay current on their financial obligations.

CREDIT CARD DELINQUENCY RATES ACROSS ALL PAST DUE CATEGORIES IMPROVED COMPARED TO JUNE 2025: Year-over-year credit card delinquencies eased from June 2025 to June 2026 throughout all delinquency stages. This indicates that consumers are maintaining discipline in their spending even amid high affordability pressures.

OVERALL CREDIT UTILIZATION RATES DOWN COMPARED TO MAY 2026 AND JUNE 2025: In June 2026, the overall balance-to-loan ratio declined to 49.61%, down from 49.79% in May 2026 and 50.78% a year earlier, remaining well below the pre-pandemic level of 54.1%. The continued decline in the balance-to-loan ratio suggests that consumers are being cautious about taking on additional debt – another sign of healthy credit behavior.
