Squamish municipal workers begin job action to secure a fair contract

SQUAMISH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Members of CUPE Local 2269 (District of Squamish workers), are set to begin rotating job action later this morning. After nearly a year at the bargaining table, workers have been unable to secure a fair deal that addresses key issues including competitive wages that keep pace with the real cost of everyday life.

“Taking job action is always a last resort,” said Celeste Bickford president of CUPE Local 2269. “No one wants to be on strike, but our members deserve wages and benefits that reflect the real cost of living and the value of the work they do.”

Services impacted

The first phase of job action will be limited in scope and will not involve a full-scale strike. Beginning today (Thursday, October 2), the following services will be impacted:

  • An overtime ban will be in place across the Public Works department.
  • Drop-in admission fees will not be collected at the Brennan Park Recreation Center.
  • Bylaw Officers will not issue parking tickets.

CUPE 2269 members represent approximately 250 workers who provide integral community services to residents, businesses, and visitors in Squamish including water and wastewater treatment, swimming lessons, children’s programs and camps, recreation services, facilities maintenance, parks and trails maintenance, bylaw and animal control, snow removal, emergency program administration, and administrative and operations support for the RCMP.
