Biocom California's 2022 Economic Impact Report Databook outlines these and other key findings about the state’s life science industry, including information on economic, demographic, investment and industry performance data. It’s clear the work the industry does every day has a significant impact on California, providing high-paying jobs directly and indirectly across the state.”
Key facts from the report include the following:
- The industry directly supported approximately 435,693 jobs in 2021, and indirectly supported an additional 736,846 workers
- California received a total of $5.1 billion in research funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) in 2021
- In 2021, venture capital directed to California’s life science innovators totaled $16.6 billion
- Nearly 1,500 patents were granted in 2021
