Spero Health opening in Galax as CDC reports Virginia saw more than 2,186 deaths related to drug overdose in 2020, a 42.1% increase from 2019. Nationally over 93,000 Americans died from drug overdose during the same timeframe. These tragic numbers reflect the urgency of resources needed in local communities to save lives.

BRENTWOOD, Tenn.--()--Spero Health, a national leader who has helped more than 25,000 patients on their journey to stable recovery from addiction, just announced it is opening a new clinic in Galax, Virginia. The Galax clinic opens Friday, November 5th and is located at 105 Doctors Park. This new clinic joins a network of more than 60 Spero Health locations throughout Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana, and Virginia and accepts Virginia Medicaid and most commercial insurance plans. Immediate appointments are available and individuals who need addiction treatment services are encouraged to walk-in for help or can call: 276-263-8410 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

The Virginia Department of Health confirmed the state had its largest number of overdose deaths recorded in a single year and was 1 of 10 states which saw a greater than 40% increase in deaths from the previous year. Speaking about this, CEO of Spero Health Steve Priest said, “Galax among other cities has been hit extremely hard over the years by the drug epidemic and the recent numbers highlight the impact the pandemic had on our communities still in crises. While people struggled with job loss, lack and loss of social supports and psychological issues, it made an already life-threatening situation even worse. Every day we continue to hear stories from those in short- and long-term recovery who relapsed because of the increase in stress in their lives. One of the biggest culprits to the spike in drug related fatality is fentanyl, a deadly opioid that is extremely potent. In Virginia, Fentanyl accounted for about 72% of all overdose deaths last year. It’s extremely dangerous and often gets mixed in with other drugs and users unknowingly ingest it. In Galax we want to bring immediate relief to families, friends and neighbors who are struggling with this disease by offering immediate access to high quality care close to home.”

Spero Health utilizes an innovative evidence-based integrated care model that combines both physical and behavioral healthcare services under one roof. Going into more details about the services patients can expect to receive at Spero Health, David Hayden, Senior VP of Clinical Services said, “Uncertainty and disruptions in daily life are still hitting those with substance use disorder particularly hard, and we want everyone to know that recovery is possible. Spero Health’s goal is to engage patients where they are in their journey and personalize the program to meet their specific needs so they can stabilize allowing for interventions to support sustained recovery efforts. Patients will have weekly access to a physician or nurse practitioner, counseling and recovery support services that help link them back to the community to address other issues such as housing, food insecurity, employment and much more. We want to make it as easy as possible for patients to get the help they need that’s both affordable and close to home.”
