LONG BEACH, Calif.--()--SCAN Group, whose holdings include SCAN Health Plan, one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage plans, announced that Scott Weingarten has been named the organization’s first chief innovation officer. Weingarten’s first order of business will be to launch Welcome Health, SCAN’s new geriatric primary care medical group.

Weingarten comes to SCAN with a well-known history of launching new companies and bringing innovative practices to some of the most prestigious institutions in healthcare. He previously served as senior vice president, chief clinical transformation officer and professor of medicine at Cedars-Sinai, where he helped lead clinical transformation efforts that resulted in improved quality, clinical efficiency, and better outcomes. For more than 15 years he also served as director of Health Services Research at Cedars-Sinai.

“Scott Weingarten’s expertise as a physician and his proven track record of driving change and innovation at leading healthcare systems is the perfect fit for SCAN as we grow, diversify and transform the delivery of healthcare for older Americans,” said Dr. Sachin H. Jain, president and CEO of SCAN Group and SCAN Health Plan.

“After admiring the work that SCAN has done for decades in caring for America’s seniors, I’m honored to join the organization,” said Weingarten, who is also board certified in internal medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians. “I look forward to working alongside SCAN’s many talented team members, who share my passion for improving the way we care for older adults.”

In addition to his work at Cedars-Sinai, Weingarten served as co-founder, president and CEO of Zynx Health, whose order set systems were used by more than 2,000 hospitals in the United States to care for more than 55% of American patients. Weingarten was also the chief clinical and innovation officer at Premier Inc. and CEO of Stanson Health. Stanson’s systems use artificial intelligence and machine learning in electronic health records to improve the value of care. He is a co-inventor of three software patents granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Welcome Health

As Chief Innovation Officer, Weingarten will work with teams across SCAN to develop and launch new care delivery strategies that diversify and redefine how older adults are cared for in the U.S.

For example, his first role will be as the leader of Welcome Health. Welcome Health is a start-up geriatric primary care medical group that will treat older adults through a combination of virtual and in-home visits. Its care model will be based around the philosophy of geriatrics, which prioritizes preventive medicine and treatments that align with patients’ goals. Welcome Health will be payer agnostic and serve members of SCAN Health Plan and also other Medicare Advantage health plans.

“Scott’s aptitude for developing and implementing technologies that provide greater value for patients and providers alike will be a great asset to SCAN generally and Welcome Health specifically,” said Dr. Jain. “Providing personalized care for seniors is what sets SCAN apart, and I’m certain that under Scott’s leadership, SCAN’s innovations will serve as models for other organizations that support the aging population.”
