MANHASSET, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (APBN) has named its 2021-2022 Research Award recipients with top honors going to John Q. Young, MD, PhD, of The Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.
In an effort to develop a more robust, independent and effective education platform for psychiatry faculty and residents, Dr. Young will use the award to design a competency-based assessment (CBA) system that will help facilitate lifelong learning. Utilizing learning analytics, interactive dashboards and coaching, among other tools, Dr. Young will assess the most impactful tactics to promote longitudinal self-regulated learning (SRL) skills.
“Roughly half of the health care in the United States is outdated in part because physicians take about a decade to incorporate new evidence into their practice. Our medical education and health care systems have failed to produce doctors that are lifelong learners,” said Dr. Young, vice chair for education at Zucker Hillside Hospital. “With the support of the APBN, our research will help identify how best to train physicians who are able to regulate their learning and change their practice as the evidence changes.”
In developing his CBA system, Dr. Young has proposed to include several components:
- Workplace-based assessment;
- Ongoing faculty development;
- Learning analytics;
- Dashboards;
- Longitudinal coaching;
- Trustworthy clinical competence decision-making processes.
Physicians across all disciplines of medicine must continue their education to stay informed on the most promising medical research, clinical decision making and evidence-based innovations. Through a coaching program and proper assessment system, physicians will learn the educational skills that may stay with them throughout their careers.
