The Ophthalmology Times Resident Writers Award Program is a competitive writing program showcasing the best case studies in anterior segment

CRANBURY, N.J.--()--Ophthalmology Times®, a leading multimedia platform dedicated to ophthalmologists, announced the top three finalists of the 2020 Resident Writers Award Program on Thursday, Nov. 12, through a live virtual event.

“The annual Resident Writers Award Program provides ophthalmic residents across the nation with a platform to highlight their passion for the eye care community,” said Mike Hennessy Jr., president and CEO of MJH Life Sciences™, parent company of Ophthalmology Times®. “Year after year, we look forward to amplifying the great caliber of intelligence showcased by nominated residents and are proud to welcome three new honorees to the 2020 class.”

To qualify for the 14th annual Resident Writers Award Program, each nominated resident candidate was required to submit an anterior segment-related case study of about 1,000 words. All submissions were reviewed and scored individually by the Ophthalmology Times® editorial board. The top three finalists were then selected through online votes submitted by the ophthalmic community.

The top three honorees are as follows:

First place: Delu Song, M.D., Ph.D., MTR, Scheie Eye Institute, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, “Clinical and in vivo Confocal Microscopic Features of a Patient with Neuropathic Corneal Pain Secondary to Small Fiber Neuropathy”

Second place: Douglas H. Jin, M.D., Dean McGee Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, “Ocular Manifestations of Mycoplasma-induced Rash and Mucositis”

Third place: Olivia J. Killeen, M.D., Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, “Anterior segment ischemia following three muscle strabismus surgery in a young adult with prior carotid artery injury”

“With a program of such prestige, the individuals honored through the Resident Writers Award Program set out and become the future academic leaders of ophthalmology,” said Peter J. McDonnell, M.D., director and professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and chief medical editor of Ophthalmology Times®. “Now in its 14th year, the program continues to identify the emerging minds of the specialty and the true talent of residents across the United States.”
