MISSISSAUGA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--One million sunflowers have bloomed at the Lakeview Village site, casting the waterfront location with a golden hue. Visitors are encouraged to come experience the field’s captivating beauty throughout September.
Visitors will also be able to experience the newly completed Sculpture, the ‘Light Within’, created by artist Ryan Longo through the artist-based initiative launched by Lakeview Community Partners Limited (LCPL) and Artscape Atelier. The partnership provided 19 local artists over $100,000 in paid work opportunities during the pandemic. The recently installed sculpture can be viewed at the top of the field, just steps from 1,600 ft of artistic works and murals, unveiled earlier this summer. The combination of the sunflowers and art installations located adjacent to the publicly accessible Waterfront Trail for walking and cycling creates a striking atmosphere for guests to enjoy art and the outdoors, made possible through creative placemaking.
The purpose of the sunflower field goes beyond visual allure. The sunflowers are intended to encourage the restoration of the site’s native habitats and nature conservancy. This is the second year in a row of the sunflower field program and is a key part of LCPL’s commitment to building a future-ready, sustainable community with strong connections to nature.
“We are thrilled to lend our project site to this extraordinary attraction for community members and visitors. We wanted to create something fun and beautiful that radiates positivity during what has been, and continues to be, a trying time for many,” said Brian Sutherland, Director of Development at Argo Development Corporation, and development lead for Lakeview Village. “We are very excited about what the future holds at Lakeview Village and for the City of Mississauga and look forward to many significant milestones ahead.”
“The sunflowers at Lakeview Village bring joy and excitement to the community. They are a symbol of renewal and the positive change ahead in our great city,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The transformation of our waterfront is a key pillar in our city’s economic recovery efforts. I’m looking forward to seeing how Lakeview Village will help redevelop and reanimate our waterfront into a hub for culture, tourism, innovation and employment for generations to come.”
Lakeview Village will be Canada’s most transformative mixed-use waterfront community, bringing new life to Mississauga and connecting residents to this portion of Lake Ontario for the first time in decades. The development will be a catalyst for economic growth and investment and feature the Lakeview Innovation District, a world-renowned centre for multi-sector innovation, research and employment, just steps from the waterfront. It will be Canada’s largest innovation district of its kind, creating over 9,000 jobs and nearly 2-million square feet of employment space all strategically located in a GTA innovation epicentre near downtown Mississauga, Pearson International Airport, and Toronto. The project will also combine diverse high-quality housing options for all lifestyles and life stages, with thriving retail and restaurants as well as trails, parks, green space, and cultural and recreational amenities – all connected to transit and the nearby 64-acre Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area.
The sunflower field is located at 800 Hydro Road in Mississauga. LCPL looks forward to welcoming community members and visitors to the Lakeview Village site to celebrate and experience the sunflowers in a safe manner as COVID-19 health and social distancing measures permit and while maintaining a minimum six-foot distance from other visitors.
