Guidehouse Insights Report Shows Commercial & Industrial Demand Response Capacity Is Expected to Increase 60% from 2020-2029

Programs can assist with capacity constraints, aging infrastructure, and grid stability

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new report from Guidehouse Insights examines the global market for commercial and industrial demand response (CIDR), providing market forecasts for cumulative capacity, enrolled sites, program spending, and revenue by region, through 2029.

CIDR is present in all global regions in 2020, and is expected to grow at a steady, moderate rate over the forecast period. In more mature markets such as North America and Europe, CIDR will serve as a mechanism to optimize a variety of distributed energy resources (DER) connecting to the grid. In more nascent regions, CIDR is laying the groundwork for possible future demand response growth by engaging small numbers of customers with large load to improve grid stability. Click to tweet: According to a new Guidehouse Insights report, by the end of 2020, CIDR capacity is expected to reach 39.8 GW globally, increasing approximately 60% to nearly 64.3 GW of CIDR capacity by 2029.

“Factors driving growth of CIDR programs are expected to vary due to overall market maturity, geography, utility market designs, and regulatory landscapes,” says Jessie Mehrhoff, research analyst with Guidehouse Insights. “Driven by capacity constraints, aging infrastructure, and desire for improved grid stability, CIDR programs also benefit from local climate and emissions targets, corporate sustainability initiatives, and utilities that want to improve customer engagement.”

While the market is expected to experience growth in the coming years, a few barriers are expected to pose challenges. These include subsidized resources in competitive markets, a failure to compensate available capacity, and limited utility visibility into behind-the-meter resources.

The report, Market Data: Commercial and Industrial Demand Response, examines the global CIDR market. The study provides an analysis of market issues including drivers and barriers associated with CIDR development. Regional and country-level overviews of key CIDR developments are included. Global market forecasts for cumulative capacity, enrolled sites, program spending, and revenue are provided by region through 2029.
